Might as well add.... The G60 Callipers are exactly the same as the GTI ones EXCEPT the connection for the brake hoses is completely different. I'm not sure if they would work with braided hoses

Yep. The G60's will be fitted on Thursday. We didn't have the tools to take off the brake hose - it had some weird crimp connection thing

No you need the different carriers to space the caliper out more. You might get 280s behind some Compomotive MOs in 14"? But I doubt it.

Standard brakes were like having none at all really.

That's not right, 256mm's should be ample for the car. Simply fitting larger disks and different pads shouldn't be the first port of call for totally shit brakes.

Also depends on what you want from the brakes. With a lot of servo assistance it can make the brakes feel like they bite well, but then once you get past this there isn't much more to give (Audi A6 is like this, they bite on quick but then soon have nothing much left to give). On the flip side some brakes don't bite initially but the more you press the better they get (Polo GT..they need a real good press to get anything out of them.)

I kept warping all of my 256mm discs. No matter what brand I used. My 280's have been fine although I did turn them blue after going round the ring.

Those discs look sweeeeet

They are still crap as ever just now. I'll give them 300 miles and if they are still crap then I'll be worried

You have to press it halfway to get any sort of braking power, and even then it ain't great. It's always felt stiff too. My sisters 1.2 Mk6 has better brakes - they bite instantly, the same with the brakes in my mums Mk7 (discs all round).

granted they need bedding in, but i am sure they should be a lot better than the standard set-up and be noticeably different esp considering you old discs and pads were bolloxed!

my mate Andy had the same set-up onto his gti this week and he is in awe at the almighty stopping power and he had this strange uneven pad/disc wear you and think sally mentioned!

Has the entire brake fluid been changed/bled?

all the ABS does is control the braking by letting off a bit when it feels the wheel lock up.

it will work whatever calipers you put on there.

Not sure if the garage bled them when they swopped the discs. The brake fluid & rear discs/pads were replaced this time last year. I've tried emergency stop and it stops quite quickly, but it's not really inspiring

If you have a lot of brake travel you should probably try getting the brakes bled and filled with a quality fluid.

You cant compare old and new brakes. New cars brakes are deceptive. Instant bite but beyond that....shite.

Anyway if you were expecting miracles just from increasing the disc size you'd be wrong. Still a single pot. Need to get some 4-pots atleast. Then you will see braking power.

well i can only compare worn 256mm standards to new 280mm upgraded brakes with braided hoses.

but I'm well impressed, they are loads better than my standard ones ever were even when they are in good nick, bite really well with very little effort then plenty good enough if you need to press any harder.

your either expecting too much or something isnt quite right, definately get the system bled.
