Basically i had a side exhaust pipe on mine, it came out on the near side just infront of the back wheel, as some of you may know this is the easiest place to do it.

But, a couple people said to me that it was illegal due to being to close to the pavment and pedestrians, so-on so-forth.

Due to wanting to go lower and these rumours, I've put back in the "normal" place, out the back, but i want it back as a side exit again, obviously ill have to make some allterations to the sill blah blah blah.

Basically are there any laws saying that your exhaust has to come out the back of the car, or if its a side exit does it have to come out of the far side?

i had this issue but basically no it doesn't matter.

can't remember exactly but as long as its not the widest point on the car your ok, so as long as it doesn't stick out further than the wing mirrors your ok

may not pass a mot but ring n ask ure mot testin station with regards to side exits. some cars run pipes either side (cobras 7s etc) but know some places can b funny. greeey area.

i deal cheers guys, MOT isnt a problem because ill just slip the rear facing pipe and box back on for that, just to be safe.

But yeh the old bill have asked before on one of the many times theyve pulled me over, i just said that, its on a proper bracket and doesnt touch the floor or stick out miles, and he just said "oh ok then now how about . . . . . . . . . . "

right checked up and as long as its not the furthest sticking out think on the car (if that makes sense) then your ok and the coppers can't do anything,

if you get pulled ask to see the law stating exhausts as they all carry a book on the laws but do it nicely and they shouldn't have a problem, i always argue with coppers but in a nice way and always get off.

its knowing when you are in the right and 9 times out of 10 unfortunatly the general public are.

I'm sure there's no law on side-exits or flamer kits.... get them both and show them who's boss!!

Haha nah as far as I know theres a max DB limit for passing the MOT, so just dont get a ridiculously loud system like on a rallycar.... Cobra's, Caterham's and Westfield's etc have side-exits, along with some American pickup trucks, but as Pheonix said dont let it protrude further than the arches/skirts or widest point of the side, as you dont want to take off peoples legs......

mclaren mercs have pass side exit pipes and i guess they are road legal!

i have one and have been advised by a friend in the police force to remove it as when (not if) i meet a moody copper i will get done for it.

according to who? The only requirement for an MOT is that the tester thinks the volume level isn't excessive. If you have evidence of that law then I'd be interested to see it because is a question I've seen loads and would like some kind of definitive answer. But there are a lot of rumours around about exhaust noise. I've even heard that any exhaust apart form the stock system is technically illegal. At the end of the day I'm yet to see anyone actually quote any court cases or actual laws which say anything about exhaust noise levels.

Track day noise levels seem to range between 90dB and 105dB in the UK. Although there are a few limitless track days still about. And this has nothing to do with laws anyway, more to do with how much the local busy-bodies complain to their local councils about the noise from a track they knowingly moved next door to.

can you provide more info? Is there actual law backing this up? What happens if vosa test your car and find it exceeds 101.1dB? Presumably dBA? I dont mean to sound like I don't believe you but I'm a sceptical person by nature and require evidence before I take something as fact.

plus the decibel level would also require some consistent measurement, like measured at a metre away on engine idle or summit.

well at track days they tend to measure 1/2 a metre away from the exhaust at a 45 degree angle at 3/4 max revs. plus a lot of tracks have drive by meters at the sides of the track which take readings while you are driving round.

I guess the vosa tests work in a similar fashion, I've never been stopped by one.

I've been stopped by a few roadside vehicle inspectors in newquay and never had problems with a loud exhaust, they werent bothered about measuring it there, probably because of too much ambient noise.

I'm sure i saw a program about a custom kit car that was being built, and it was subject to a noise emissions test for its paperwork, i just assumed it was part of the extended test that those vehicles are subject to.

i would guess that there is no concrete figure but you can just get done for causing a public nuisance offence

real proper noise shoud come from your engine, not from a exhaust note

bearing in mind i drive a 1.0, so its exhaust or nothing.lol. if it was a vr6 then i would agree but its not. :(

I got pulled for noise On my beetle, straight through exhaust :p was told the id "made too much noise in a residential area" haha

the 101.1Db limit is a requirement for all car manufacturers to go off for standard cars, most though are well below as its meant as a maximium limit.

most places aren't arsed as most exhausts that pass the required british standard standards should end up below the limit as when yuo have a custom exhaust built then the exhaust builder should work off the fact that if its originally a 2 box system then you should put 2 boxes back in, and 1 box system then you only need 1 box.

VOSA never check anyway as:-

1. its too much hassle

2. they never can be arsed doing it as you have to take in to consideration wind direction and angle of the exhaust pipe.

believe me its not just a case of pointing at the exhaust.

only know all of this as

1. i'm a custom exhaust builder

and

2. one of the guys who lived across the road from me was an SVA tester and he knew all the laws

handy when your MoT was due as he used to look over my car for free first and give me a bit of a heads up as i used to help him with his Lotus 7 kit car

so basically youve bum licked your way through the past however many MOTs...........i like it.lol
