Any one had any funny/ unbelievable garage experiences?

I had the usual con attempt on me yesterday when I went to get my tracking done. First he couldn't track it because it was too low. Then he could if I left my car with him for an hour and he changed the rubbers on the wishbone first

He also kindly pointed out my tyres were too small and how hadn't they rolled off yet

Another interesting thing I found out, is that my car is so low, it actually doesn't have any suspension

I only wanted my tracking done!

Anyone else got any similar experiences?

Na, If I do use a garage I tend to use a competent one

I have had the "can't do um tracking - too low..ug" from a garage before...I was going to recommend SCA Race and Rally in Norwich, but i just noticed your location is south wales....

The funniest one I've had was a few years back I needed a driveshaft doing on my mk2 and didn't have the hours in the day, so I took it to a mechanic I knew.

When I got there to pick it up he was just getting in from a test drive in it, and was white as a sheet. The first words he said to me was "WTF's wrong with your brakes?!?!!?"

He'd got himself down to offerring to sort them out for half price for me before I explained that they were working fine, and that mk2's don't have servos. He still didn't believe me that they were fine until I showed him how to use them.

hahahahahaha i've had that loads of times. they always mention the brakes when i go in for MoT untill i pressed the brake pedal myself for the brake test then they realised they were fine

not sure if you could do this but could you leave it slightly high enough so the garage can do the tracking then just wind em down once the trackings been done

^ If you wind it up and down then surely its just going to put out the tracking anyway since your adjusting the suspension?

the garage where i get my wheels tracked have a special tool for sitting inside the dish of wheels with rubber pads instead of going round the outside, dunno if this is something that is very expensive hence why no one has it but then again he does most of the modded cars round here

I took mine to The Hub on Broadway, mines pretty low and they were pretty much the only place who would touch it!

I will be lowering my car tmoro on coilies. Then will be taking it for tracking doin... Is there anything I should look out for, (ie the mechanic trying to pull a fast one?)

not sure if you could do this but could you leave it slightly high enough so the garage can do the tracking then just wind em down once the trackings been done

Even if I could do that, I won't be going there again

Yep and if my coilovers are adjusting atall, it's going lower

I was reccomended FJ by Campbell on SO-WAL, went there and they said that they'd be able to do it eventually but it would take a while because of the lowness. I didn't trust them that much, and they talked to me like i was an idiot so i went to the HUB. They're decent, dont charge the earth and can generally fit me in a lunchour if i randomly turn up!

He uses the older mirror method so there shouldn't be a problem with how low/high the car is. Vale 4x4 is in cowbridge, PM me if you want their number.

Fair do's, the Hub charged me £20 for full laser alignment and checked my camber too. Infact, i think i only paid £16 because that's all i had

i once got told by a garage that it was impossible to do the tracking on a mk2 polo. they told me the best thing to do would be to put standard suspension back on. which they could do for a small fee of course.

A while back I took a standard mk2 in for tracking, the old hands had gone for lunch and left 2 young lads running the place. They couldn't work out what was wrong with one of my steering arms, as it didn't have any adjustment in and "looked bent". Strange that, every mk2 polo I've ever seen has a bent looking steering arm that won't adjust

Ended up walking them through how to track a mk2 polo up.

Two lengths of Dexion or other light angle iron. Four bits of electrical flex. Tie dexion to front wheels with flex so it's pointing out the front and resting against both rims (or tyre walls). Same both sides. Measure between Dexion immediately in front of wheels and measure again as far out forward as you've managed to get the Dexion to hang. Adjust until the two are the same and you have 0 degrees toe-in which is what the Mk2 wants! Garage? Girls!

p.s. Does this qualify me for Pikey Techniques?

p.p.s Camber's the same, 'cept you stand the car up on its end first.
