Nothing in this suggested that the plates were to be run legally, and the vast majority know that they ARE illegal but at the end of the day its up to the person if they fancy running the risk.

But to come in and directly say 'dont talk shite' its totally uncalled for and instead of making me look stupid for stating a fact that the plates of europl8 actually are reflective its made you look like a nugget.

PLus if i was to run pressed plates i'd rather have a gb band and for them to be reflective jst so i have more of a case and may have been pulled by a lenient copper.

And i totally agree that there should be differing opinions but realisticly if i we were stood in a group face to face you wouldnt be rude and say something like that so why on here? i wouldnt just turn round n its manners pal

The vast majority of people may be aware that these types of plates are illegal but what about the minority that doesn't.

The fact I picked upon was not whether the europl8 plates are reflective, it is their level of reflectivity which may be more or less than the British Standard which is equally as illegal as being non reflective.

To say that the Police will be more lenient with you for breaking the law that little bit less is wrong. You break the law, you pay the price. That must be stressed especially with the crackdown on foreign plates these past few months.

Those plates are the car are the one's you got from plateman?

I know it's quite obviously yes BUT on his site it hasn't got the badges things in the middle of the plate in examples

Plain British plates look better anyway.

as much as you are debate has made me laugh i am well aware the plates are illegal, and i never asked for someone to read me the riot act. i simply asked where i could get them from. Now... unless you would like to participate in the actual topic of the thread... please refrain from commenting, as to be honest, your not saying anything worth listening to anyway. Were not children, were well aware what the law states, if we choose to break it, deal with it!

europl8 now make pressed plates with uk font. (picked some up at UDs) still not legal on newer cars but certain letters stand out more than others..

eg.0 has a cut through it.. J is a total different shape (in euro font.)

just keep away from the D band n as i said uk font stands out alot less than euro font.

I've jsut been made aware that since january, VOSA have lifted all restrictions on number plates, meaning any number plate can pass an MOT and hence is not illegal :)

I've known alot of people to have been stopped recently, argued that point, and the police couldnt do anything about it, and left them on their way.

There isn't a press release from VOSA on that issue or the Department of Transport, it sounds like the sort of thing that would be mentioned?

Also does that imply ANY number plate design/style? Have ALL the restricitions been lifted? Hyperthetically does that mean I can write my registration on a bit of paper and stick it in the window [not that I would want to].

It just seems like it's something the authorites really wouldn't do, not to the extent on lifting ALL restrictions.

Any number plate has been able to pass an MOT before, it's NOW that they are changing it so they can fail you for a non-UK plate. The MOT tester previously only had to be able to read the plate, now it is a fail item if it is not up to spec.

With this sort of comment, I am going to play it careful because I have no idea if they have been lifted or not. My common sense is saying not..

I've sent an E-Mail to VOSA but am still waiting for a reply.

The DVLA website mentions nothing about lifted rules. It still says what I have already provided a link for as the most recent rules.

I enquired in person at the DVLA office, I walk past it everyday so what the heck. The staff said the rules have just been made tighter, fitting with what I have posted above and before. Apparently now a plate with any form of damage can be penalised as a non conforming plate, BUT this is not a proven fact, just hear say.

I have euro plates on my polo, with the D for Germany at the start with two plakettes in the middle. I purchased em from "German-number-plates.com" and also the stickers.

Iv had em on for over 2 months now and havnt been pulled once, i know they're illegal but i take my chances. They look the dogs!!!!

Has anyone had any instances where they've bin pulled and what fines or penalties they incurred?

£30 fine per illegality, a list of illegalities, proof of new number plates due to the original plates being unclear, 21 year old plates were pretty tired.

Vehicle defect form due to illegal plates, new MOT required with checks all over the vehicle, at my cost regardless of a pass or fail. If the vehcile was to fail on neglected parts or undeclared modifications, 3 points per item with the exception of item groups such as undeclared alloy wheels or brake upgrades, the brakes being pairs front and rear. Tyres are seen as individual items though.

Fortunately my car passed, no failures, no comments.

I was fine with the police officers and changed the plates on the spot. In turn they were fine with me but had to go through the procedures. I was allowed to obtain my new number plates and book the vehicle into the MOT station they had suggested within 31 days or declare the vehicle as sorn otherwise the vehicle was to be destroyed.

If the plates were changed, the MOT performed and passed without illegalities and the fine was paid within 14 days, the fine would reduce and did reduce to £30 per plate as per the officer's comments.

I was given a whole load of reasons as to why the numberplates are how they are and it makes sense, they're not just to get you, they even showed me how my plates appeared on their screen, they were so bright that they appeared as white rectangles with no other information. Had the car been stolen, how would any traffic camera ever find it if the plates appeared like so, or how would a passing police car recognise it if the screen didn't flash up as a reported vehicle.

At the end of the day you can all aruge til your blue in the face about whats rights and wrong but tbh nobody really cares. I shall be getting plates and i shall be putting them on my car. I'm well aware that they are illegal and its a chance I'm prepared to take. Now, can we stop acting like were still in school and all play nice?

DfT have provided the following wording on the "new" number plate rules...

VOSA issued amended guidance to test stations in September 2007 advising vehicle testers of new reasons for rejection in the MOT test for including where a registration plate displayed on a vehicle registered on or after 1st September 2001 didn't include the supplier details on the plate.

The new MOT requirements merely reflect what is required by The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001 as amended. There is a VOSA leaflet on the internet which explains why the registration plates are checked and why it is important for the plates to meet the standards set. I was pulled over ysterdy and was told to change the plates and pay a £30 fine.

The police were fine with me and i dont think they are arseholes or whatever people wnt to call em, i jst knw they have a job to do.

Still gna keep em, but onli have plates on 4 shows n meets. Jst a set of old borin plates on now, i feel naked! Ha!

good comments and common sense from quinny, and the german style plates look crap anyway, maybe 10 years ago when only a few people were running german style plates they were individual , but nowadays nearly every watercooled car you see at shows has them , they look ridiculous as most of them are english spec right hand drive cars , my friend came over from germany and we were at a british vw show bvf, he said where is that car from i told him it was an english spec car with german plates fitted as it is all the trend over here , he looked confused,and asked why,

Because they look better than normal plates irrelivent of anything else pressed or plastic? if pressed were legal then they'd be one hell of a lot more popular.

I'd love to see a Bently or TVR or a english car make in a differnt country runnign english style plates just for the pure amusement factor
