What Would You Do? (Parts Sold)

Featured Replies

Basically I'm after some opinions on a problem regarding some golf gti clocks i sold last year on another forum.

They were working fine in the car,all mfa functions showed correct readings etc.I sold them for £20 posted back in early November last year. I've just had a private message from the person in question telling me they are faulty.

hi mate, finally got aorund to fitting the clocks i bought off you and teh rev counter reads 600rpm too low, theres actually a track on the back, on the printed circuit which is blown apart

my old set work perfect, and this isnt a fresh blow..

what can you do for me bud?

Now i obviously wouldn't have sold them if they were faulty, and they seemed to be working fine in my golf. i then get another pm shortly after...

Attempted a fix,but no luck mate.

i managed to make the circuit across the blown track, from the main plug to the other end where the track ran, and even with that the rev counter is reading 600rpm too low..

iirc i paid you £20 for them.. so I'm gonna ahve to ask for a refund or some sort of compo to make up as they dont work

So 4 months has passed, and he's wanting a refund. While i don't want to cause an arguement, am i in the wrong by not wanting to give a refund? If he had told me when he recieved them, or shortly after i would have no problem, but 4 months later! How can he know its not blown when he fitted them into his car?

Anyone have any thoughts?

Pettsy

You dont know if he shagged them, do you?

Sold as seen-hes had four months to find fault-its taken this long?

Hes trying it on.

The fact that he's had a go at bodging them himself before letting you try and correct them or sort the situation out is a no no for starters. You gave no guarantees with them either and I presume were sold as seen?

It's difficult, it is just £20 so perhaps a simpler fix than if it were say £100.

However, you say they worked when you sold them.

It is always difficult because genuinely he may not have gotten round to fitting them until now but then again he may have just broken them and thought he'd blame you.

Did he collect and see them working? If so it was sold as seen.

Did you post without a viewing? If so then you have a problem.

Obviously you don't want to an argument as you have already stated, but you don't want to lose your money either. If it were me, I would offer a £10 refund maximum due to the time that has passed.

If you are feeling really charitable then..... Have you got anyway of testing them yourself? If you have get him to post it back to you (at his expense) and then if you find they are faulty refund what he initaly paid minus the initial cost of postage. so he would get about £12-15 back.

But I am inclined to say that they were working perfectly well when they were sent and 4months is a long time, and he has had a go a bodging them so no refund..

But if you are going to refund I would ask the guy to post the clocks back first so you can 'test' them and you can investigate.

if this other forum is like ours

and i qoute

The Parts For Sale forum is for private traders only. Use at your own risk!!

and my own personal rule

it is up to the buyer to check quality of the item on receipt of said item!

if something is fecked, there is no point 4 months down the line saying so!!!

he could have had them in his car for 4months!!!

i bought some GT clocks off here months back, had them in my car for months and now the rev counter sticks when its cold.

i wouldn't have the bare face cheek to ask for money back.

as stated previously "sold as seen"

Sounds well dodge.

4 months to fit some clocks and whips out the soldering iron when they dont work....

If it was me i might have done a refund but with him messing with them i wouldnt. He could of been doing some sort of mod and has shorted them.

Or it could be genuine, but i doubt it.

If somethings faulty on receipt or within a couple of weeks, I'll sort things out for people so long as they'll help me to help them, but 4 months on, sorry, no chance.

I'd agree that it's too late, and also as he's altered them then it's his problem now. Even products WITH any kind of warranty are voided if you attempt to repair them yourself, so something sold as seen that has been altered 4 months from sale really has no foundation for a refund! As for how to handle it, I'd explain why I was refusing a refund - he doesn't really have a case if you explain it all from your point of view, and as has been said it's 'only' £20.

Is the -600rpm the only problem? If it's -600rpm throughout the rev range then it sounds like the needle's been taken off and put back in the wrong place!

Sounds like a con to me.

You buy as seen, it isn't really down to you to refund him..it's not like it was damaged in the post and he noticed the week he got it.

4 months is a bit excessive in my opinion. I'd just explain the reasons..his problem at the end of the day, he probably wouldn't offer you a refund if the roles were switched either.

I wouldnt refund it,

if he doesnt know were you live tell him to stick it. Thats if you sold them fully working etc

if he doesnt know were you live tell him to stick it. Thats if you sold them fully working etc

I'll second that.

i assume he'll have my address,as he paid me via paypal. They were 100% working when i sold them!

Id tell him to stick it still, it must of been something that HES done so therefore its HIS problem, not yours.

can you get a photo from him to "prove" the damage?

withdraw you money from paypal btw, if he opens a dispute they can just take it!

A good point made up there^^^^^

Hes had a play with it and expects a refund "FECK OFF"!

I'm sure PC World would refund you if youd had a go at that shonky pc on boxing day with your soldering iron.

If they worked when you sold them and hes waited this long to get a refund I'd not give a refund. 4 months is a long time to wait and complain about something. Plus he only paid £20 including postage which isn't a huge amount.

Yep. 4 months is long enough! Think about it, most places give 28 days refund, and that's a proper business. Also, he can't expect you to give you a refund if he's been at it with a soldering iron. How do you know he didn't break it then??

Don't worry about him having your address, if he tries anything in that regard over £20, just stick him in the back of the van and drop him off in a random part of the Peak District.

id tell him he could kiss my ass befor ei gave him any refund or "compo" for them. For all you know they could have been in his car the whole time, he could have been messing around with them and broke them, u dont know, so why take responsibility for something u had no control over? tell him hes got more chance of a shag from the queen :)

just tell him you wont refund because of the time period.

if he kicks up a fuss he was probably being genuine but if he gives up at the first hurdle he was probably just trying it on.

i wouldnt give him anything either way though.

lets put it this way.....

computer says no!!!!!!!!

tell him go screw himself, nothing he can do, even as a private seller you are only obliged to give 30days warrenty anyway so 4 years is just a fuckin joke especially when he has messed with the clocks

maybe they are the ones he replaced.... obviously he bought them off you to replace faulty dials. urs may still be fitted and his broken ones he is tryin got get money back with.

taken him too long to get in contact with you. go for the time period and the fact that you are sure they were working fine!! you've obvi got his address, send the members of this forum down there lol.

£20 isnt really that much tbh, just the principle of the time period that creates the issue.

It sounds like he is trying to pull a fast one mate.

When I get something through the post off ebay or here or whatever I'll check the condition right away.

If he waited 4 months to check them he obviously wasn't that desperate for them and the only problem is the tacho showing -600rpm less than the engine is doing. So what? They are old clocks I'm guessing so they wont be the most accurate thing on earth.

Also whos to say his 'tinkering' hasn't made then worse or broke them in the first place.

I'd tell him to shove his complaint where the sun dont shine!
