i have recently dropped my mk2 and now the camber is out on the front causing prety bad uneven tyre wear. i cant afford to keep changing tyres, so i need to fix the problem.

i know there is a lot of you on here with mk2's slammed, so how did you go about this problem?

i also think the tracking is out. I've had it done since i lowered it, but if you look front on you can see both the wheels are pointing outwards. but I've taken it back and they said its right....surely if you can see its out from the front then it must be badly out? and then i was told somewhere else that its one sided tracking on my car and i have to take it to VW themselves. is this true?

there must be a way of fixing this. please advise me as everytime i drive it they are getting balder and balder fast!

id take it somewhere else mate, a good place should be able to sort the tracking and camber for you, not cheap but will save you money in the long run.

There is no camber adjustment on the front.

However it sounds like your tracking is well out, so I'd take it to somewhere else.

as for camber you have several options:

- un-lower it

- keep buying new tyres

i popped into VW dealers for a quote earlier and they said they can track my front 2 wheels and sort the camber on all 4...

for the hefty price of £105

i suppose if it means it will totally sort the problem its worth it eh?

like the above posters said...theres no ajustment for camber on amk2 polo, so vw wont cure that , unless you think they might fit ajustable top mounts in that price

don't give VW that sort of money to do your tracking and camber, at most i'd pay £50.

i dnt think they will somehow. lol.

well i told them what my problem was and thats what they told me. so what do they mean then? I'm a bit lost.

and also i have heard of putting shims in the hubs to adjust camber yourself. someone said hacksaw blades??

Once the tracking's right your tyre wear should reduce dramatically.

Camber shims will work on the back but the front is set, absolutely no adjustment anywhere.

well i paid 15 quid to have it done at the garage i last went to, but you can see its miles out. their answer was yeah we noticed that but it must be the camber.

but I'm talking BOTH new front tyres have now gone almost bald along the inside over about an inch of the tread. and that is just under a 2 week period.

That's because the tracking's still out. Take it to somewhere else and get them to have a look at it... or adjust it yourself as best you can.

I was recommended this place.. http://www.mototec.co.uk/index.htm they do four wheel alignment and apparently will sort out any tracking/camber issues out according to their website. I was told it would cost £70 but that was a while ago now...might be worth a look?

search for your local place and they should do a good job, 5% discount too just print out the voucher online.

do they point out alot or just point out? they may have been set to the correct track i'm not sure what it is on a mark 2 but often the toe is set slightly like that and as the vehicle moves they pull in.

If your cambers out then you'll never get a proper track, if its similar to the mark 4 mcpherson strut then the 2 bolts where the strut bolts to the hub, remove them and drill the holes to an oval shape slightly allowing the camber to be adjusted.

Mk2 is nothing like a mk4 unfortunately.

it's nothing like a mark 4, the hub and strut is one piece.

You'll never sort your camber issues without adjustable top mounts.

There's no point in paying the extra money for 4 wheel alignment on a Mk2 either as you can only track the 2 front wheels.

Find yourself a garage with decent tracking equipment and get it set to parallel, the camber isn't going to make the wheels toe in or out but it will mean that you'll get more wear on the inside of your tyres than normal anyway.

i went back to the first garage today, only because it would be free it they did anything. they guy said that the camber will make the toe poke out. but surely that isnt true is it? its a whole different axis than tracking (sorry for speaking in physics term but its how i understand it)

the toe does poke out a clear visable amount, and if this is the case surely that means the wheels are not parallell. i know you wont get a propper track with camber, but the camber is only slight to be honest. i know the wheels will wear on the inside more but at this rate it will be new tyres every month.

how much are these camber adjustable top mounts, and where are they from?

does your steering wheel stay center when you drive in a straight line when you take your hands off it? obv safety first an all lol if it wanders off then the traccking is deffo out, if it stays straight on an even road then the tracking is probably ok

yeh the camber will make the toe point out, basically the lower you go the more negative camber you get and the more positive toe (toe out) you get

so you have to lower it then go get the front wheels tracked, as people have said it should be between £10-20 depending on where yuo get it done.

also sorry to tell you dude but when you lower a Mk2 that much thats what effect it has, how do you think i feel with a -7offset aswell, my tyres last fuck all and they are £75 each because i don't buy cheap tyres as i actually like grip

of course you could do like me, I cut the struts in two near the bottom, welded on a couple of plates, and now I've got camber adjustable struts. Cost less than £5 in materials to mod the struts and £100 a pair of tyres, so it made sense to do it to extend the life of the tyres.
