I have coilovers on my mk4 but they dont seem to be branded, all i know is they cost the previous owner £200. Anyway, the ride is atrocious. its bumpy, stiff and my car bounces like tigger. I have no idea how much it has been lowered by but i love it at the height it is...

can anyone suggest a decent set of coilovers? or am i better of putting the standard suspension back on and getting lowering springs?

Dont get new lowering springs with out uprated shocks. Stick with coilovers. The ride is stiff and had, thats what they do. They shouldnt bounce too much, be there could be a number of things wrong with the coilovers themselves that could be fixed causing this. If you still want a new coilovers, FK and Koni are well rated, but you shouldnt have trouble with the ones you have becuase they're cheap.

but if you value a decent and comfortable ride then cheap coilovers are not the way

they will be hard and stiff by pure definintion of what they were intended for. I also was looking in to buying some but if you read many many posts on here a lot of people comment on how horrendously stiff the ride is

as far as lowering springs the lower you go it stands to reason the less travel your suspension has and as such the ride will be harsher.... excellent for a race track but if you drive on shitty roads its gonna be noticeable.

Expensive coilovers are gonna cost you especially with adjustable damping to soften the ride, so that depends if you wanna spend 600 odd quid just for the look?

Philj on here sells spring and shock kits which i believe will be a softer ride than coilovers and can give reasonable lowering

There are also other spring and shock kits from people such as Pi , Gmax , weitec...etc etc...

my coilovers will go to 85mm and my car isnt at that limit, id hazard a guess to say my car is around 60mm - 65mm, i guess i jsut want my cake and want to eat it too... i want the car to look like it does now, be nicer to drive and not give my whiplash and a broken back evertime the road surface is uneven and dont want it to cost me a packet :(

Well then id say get some nice quality comfy springs and shocks with progressive spring rates!! shoudltn be any more than 250 ish quid!!!

I'm thinking about a 40 / 50 / 60 mm drop on something like the Pi spring and shock kit cos its a well known make powerdercoated shocks 2 year warranty and progressive rate springs

FK highsports.... dunno how much they cost for a Mk4 Polo, but I'm running them on my Mk2 Golf and must be about 100mm down, and the ride isn't any worse than standard I don't think, the only time I noticed it being really bad was driving on a cobbled street where I was wearing trackies and ended up being vibrated about and slipped under the seatbelt

They the adjustable damping ones? the coilovers?

the colilovers need to be that hard to have it that low or it would be scrubbin all over the place, shame but you do get used to it

got any pics of how low your car is? if you want comfort then you would be spending a bit more. koni adjustables with eibach springs are an amazing combination, but i dont think you can go lower than 45-50mm then. fk konigsport coilovers are damper adjustable so the ride will be a bit better, but as said if you go low you need to b prepaired to put up with a bit of harshness. cheap coilovers are basically a cosmetic mod, cheapest way to get you belly down. if you want belly scraping low with king size bed comfort then more folding queens need to be used.

or Gmax... altho gmax are on ebay (which is usually a bad sign) they do have 3 year warranty i mean... its a shock absorber and a spring....sure would be better if only a tiny bit than standard ones..(but then i aint buying them for its Racing ability am i) and with 3 year warranty cant be a bad thing?

the shocks and springs on my Mk2 breadvan had been there for like 30 years !!!! never replaced... yeh... they got a bit bouncy towards end... but didnt leak... didnt fuck up in any way

Hmm sounds like a plan bet fitting is a bit of a steal though!!!

You could run new G40 shocks on a Mk2, they are slightly uprated and designed to work with slightly lower springs I believe.

For a Mk4 valver/GTI shocks must be slightly uprated, the valver is definately lower and stiffer than the other models anyway.

ok heres my opinion from years of selling all types of suspension kits....

PhilJ - Very nice kit although i find them very bouncy from all the cars i've been in with them on but value for money...well can't knock them, better than PI at least so great if your on a budget.

PI kits - BIG BIG BIG NO NO!!!! PI stands for Pig Iron, their crap cheap kits and not worth a wank

G-max - Very good budget kits, i run a -70mm full kit on my Mk2 breadvan and gives a very nice ride 30% stiffer than standard

Koni - By far one of the better ones out there, very good kits, well worth the money and even better if you can afford the adjustable kits, also do coilovers that are awesome but very expensive

Spax - same as koni but my mate prefers the way his ride compared to koni so i would say personal preference between these and koni's, also do coilovers that are very good

Gaz - Very good company that i have delt with a lot, great suspension kits available to custom spec so you can choose your own spring rates, etc.... also make coilovers that are awesome but expect to lose some weight from your wallet.

basically if your choosing what to do heres a little guide

Springs - fine if your ONLY going 35-40mm as they don't cause your shocks to blow as if you go lower your rods in your shocks sit lower and therefore your shocks are always under more pressure which fucks them.

Full Kit - Shock and springs, great if your going lower than 40mm as the shocks will be shortened with shorter rods so you will get a nicer ride than if you just had really low springs and also the dampers will work better, also available in fixed rate so you fit and forget about them, adjustable so you can play about with the damping force so set them softer or harder (worth it if you can afford it)

Coilovers - EXPECT A HARD RIDE!!!!! thats what they do...ride hard, they are for track cars so what do you expect, yeh they are great for slamming your car but remember what they are designed for, expect to pay at least £500+ for a decent set, ie. Gaz Gold coilovers for my Mk2 are £850 for the set!!!!
