someone posted this pic at the german Golf MkIII forum.

I think the X-reg couldn´t be right, because it means a registration after feb. 01 - correct?

No thats the old style X-reg for some time in the 70's or something.

So it will be a private plate, probably the boys initials or something.

Can't be right, this is what an X plater should look like :p

Yep, will be a private/personalised plate. That suffix style with the X at the end was issued between August 1981 and July 1982.
