Thought about installing the oil catch thank that i've got but i'm a little unsure hwere i'm gonna put it! Was thinking on the bulkhead but i just wanted to see hwere anyone else had theres..........

For those that have modified their engines breather systems an oil catch tank collects the crankcase gases that would other wise be fed back into the inlet of the engine to be burnt away. Once in the tank the gases condense into a crappy oily liquid.

The reason for modifying the breather in the first place is to provide a cleaner supply of air for the engine, at the expense of the environment which is why the factory set up burns it off. If you've ever opened an air box to find a load of oil in it, that's where it will be from.

Following on from Mr P, is it easy to do to the engine? Also can this been done to any engine eg 1.4 in a mk4 and do you get much extra out of doing it (I'm guessing so since your getting cleaner air in, thus more oxygen in)

Forgive me for being an absolute idiot but looking at the pictures it seems the mod just requires the cutting of the breather pipe and connecting both ends to a tank of some decription?

Where do you guys get your breather pipe from? I used heater pipe but its not ideal, degrades from the fumes..

You can in theory do it to any engine where you can access the breather system to make the modification. The gains are small. It's commonly done as a by product of the G40 Boost Return modification.

Ok cheers, its just I've got sealed induction kit for my 1.4 8v, with nothing on the end of the breather pipe ( since it doesnt feed back in to throttle body now) and was just wondering about this rather then just putting a breather filter on teh end.

I don't know where your breather pipe exits, but you don't want to be breathing that crap in. Make sure it's away from any ducts or vents.

An Oil catch tank can enable you to run your oil breather system to vent to the atmosphere, rather than to the engine. The catch tank condenses some of the fumes and the filter you often see ensures that the remaining 'oil exhaust' is further purified before it reaches the air to make it less harmful, but not completely.

Oil vapour is normally recirculated into the engine - this lowers the octane and potency of the air/fuel mixture, and in forced induction engines in particular this can trigger more problems. Either way, it gives you a cleaner air supply which should stop your throttle body or carburettor getting gunked up.

Slight power gain and lower maintenance are the benefits.

cheers guys. I've just gotta figure out now how to install it! I got it off ebay and whilst it is nice and shiny, it has no way of being mounted! Was gonna use jubilee clips to secure it to the bulkhead. I'll take some pics when i find a decent camera.

Yours sounds a little like mine (especially if it's ebay gear) - I had to make an L-shaped bracket, but I'll get some snaps for you in the morning, Jon.

Btw, the pipe you see in the pic came with it! I'm not gonna use it because i think its really household hosepipe for watering your plants!

i'm using Samco silicon hosing, the oily liquid eats up any hose anyway, i found my old one had perished, i'll get pictures up when i find the pipe

i'm using a coke bottle as a catch tank

I used an old redex bottle for the polo

now just have one of those filters you can get cos I got it free

My tank wasn't exactly expensive either!

My OMP front strut brace had a bracket already on there...

So i just mounted my catch tank onto that

As you can clearly see mine is far superior to the rest of yours

also where does it connect, crank case breather in, then just vent to air?
