So it's my understanding that there is an issue with handbrake cable length when doing a rear disk conversion on a Mk3 Polo...can someone remind me what the issue is? Too long, or too short?

How have people gotten around this issue?

Had a look on the net and found this company: http://www.speedycables.co.uk/ who make custom cables, might be an option for getting something that fits really well.

Any pointers really appreciated.

Issue is that the golf cables are too long. There are sorts of methods. Cut 'n' shut 2 cables. Use Scirocco cables. Make your own from scratch.

Never really got round to working it out myself but there are enough threads about this subject. Me and heg123 had a slightly off-topic discussion in his build thread about them.

Although would be nice if you could get a cable the perfect length off the shelf :biggrin:

mk2 golf ones are to long. i just modifide them to fit..

I don't know if this is possible....but was just thinking about another way around this and maybe have a look at using the longer golf cable but just give it a longer route back to the brakes? Like on the polo there are those metal clips that the cable sits in, maybe put another one or two of them under the car or reposition the ones that are there. Obviously you would have to make sure there are no sharp bends in the cable, so it will still be able to move freely.

Again don't know if this is possible....just thought I would throw it out there ...

the mk2 cabels go all the way to the handbrake. but the polo ones jone together on the axel and from there one goes to the handbrake

I saw a fancy rear axle on a German site...something weird going on at the back...

I think he means that gold bracket thats on the beam itself....

I think its like the things you get on some Fiats, where the two cables that go to the brakes join in some funny pivot thing, and then only one cable goes forward to the handbrake lever.

IIRC the Polo does that as well? 3 handbrake cables.

That bracket is the same on a Mk3 Polo, it dropped off mine once and you end up with no handbrake when it does.

I have 256mm brakes going up front, I dislike drums to work on, the disks look better, they're easier to service and with the inline bias adjuster I should be able to tame them if they are little too much.

make your own. find a decent motorbike shop and they should have outer and inner on a roll to make the bits you need.

thay are mine made out of mk2 golf one's if i cood be botherd i wood take them off and take some photos. if you wont some photos let me no. thay look just like the ones in that photo

I'd recommend getting some mk4 golf rear calipers as these have less of a tendancy to sieze like the mk2 calipers do

If you dont fit the bias valve to the rear beam, your likely to end up in a spin.
