I'm going to be soon replacing my girlfriends open air sunroof, aparently it isnt to hard, just wondering if anyone has got a guide at all??

Hey there.

If your replacing the entire sunroof system, its relatively easy, if just the top cover... I'm not to sure.

For the entire system.

Remove sealing strip from inside the car (white bit that holds the internal roof to the car body)

Gently easy the internal roof down slighty and you can see that the sunroof is screwed in with lots of black torx screws. Just undo all of these and the sunroof should just lift out of the top of the car. Do it gently, as you will need to disconnect the motor from the wiring.

Make sure you clean around the roof before fitting the new sunroof

cheers mate, i went up to stevens vw dismantlers yesterday and found an absolutly mint one!!! £150 without motor. And it was on a car so i got to watch it getting taken out which was handy. Do you think i will need to use silicon sealant to put it back on, doubt it but i dont realli know. Because they dont use it went they put it on.

Sweet, thats a good price, they're getting harder to find in perfect condition. I'm still waiting for photos from one dismantler.

Not sure about the sealant, It shouldnt need it and as you say VW originally doesnt use any.

DONE! what an absolute piece of piss. How easy, would av been better if i didnt have to do a load of rust repair before i put i back on though. Hardest part was getting that crappy bit of trim back on which goes between headlining and the sun roof. haven't tested if its water tight though, should be, only time will tell, or a bucket....... easy job though was surprised. I know Stevens VW dismantlers has another one dont know if it as mint but worth a go. Good guys down there.

Well done, hope mine doesnt have any rust problems, hadn't thought about that as a possible issue. Iv managed to get a good deal on a roof now, hopefully will arrive on tuesday! Enjoy the pleasures of a water free polo...

I'm takin mine into the bodyshop next week, and gettin the roof sprayed black, and i contacted the company that factory fittedd the openair system, they're called WEBASTO, and if u give you go on their site, get you are local dealer/fitter info, they will send you a guide if you ask nicely!!

I have a 1997 Polo with an open air roof, it has a few big rips in it and is leaking onto the back seats. I found a supplier (carhood.com) who can supply one. When you replaced yours was it the complete system or just the outside cover? I have been quoted £230 to get it fitted but it is a lot of money what it is. I would rather do it myself but don't want to mess up replacing it...
