My New Ride (Finally have sound)

Featured Replies

Well after a 340 mile round trip me and my girl friend decided to make use of out 5th anniversary and we went and picked up a 1982 mk1 golf gti yesterday.

I had an idea a while back that i wanted another car which needed a few bits doing to it. Originally i was going to change the look of my GT which i got off stu a while back. But after finding out how practical and how good it looks on 15"s i didnt want to change much.

However after doing a bit of research, i decided i couldnt afford too insure two cars on two separate policies. I also kept this quiet from the girl friend as i knew if i told her i was going to get another car she would go mad!

Then about a month or so ago, she said that she wanted to start driving again. She used to have a 16v for her first car and her mum kindly put me on the insurance, hence why i am here. So when she told me she wanted a car but didnt have a whole lot of money, i said i would go halves with her if she put me on the insurance and vice versa.

After looking at many diff VW's we came across a mk1 gti at UD, with 11months mot and 4 months tax.

Engine wise its spot on, body work is okish, not mint and the interior needs work.

Mods that were included were Weitec coilovers and a stainless steel exhaust system.

Anyway enough of that, here are some pics:

Cleaning that began today (sorry about the dodgy pics didnt know that my dig cam was set to low quality when in auto mode!):

Far too much effort put into the bonnet as it seemed to be a bit faded from rest of bodywork

Oh and found this pic of me and a few mates before a night out at Surrey uni, forgit i had this on my cam

P1010005.jpg

I'm the one on the right, was not 100% at the time

Anyway I'm really pissed off about the last two pics of the GTI. Wish i had noticed that when in auto mode that my cam was set to its lowest quality and now its too dark to take more pics. I will update later with some arty pics when i get it home.

Anyway our plans for it are:

Sort out the interior (have managed to source a matching interior on ebay which isnt far from me. Hope i can win it now!)

Get some new wheels (yet decided, suggestions please!)

Maybe wind the collies down a bit

Sort out a sound system

Tidy up the inside

Full respray!? If i can convince my mums mate to do it cheap enough and I'm still yet too decide if it needs it

And the other great thing is that my girl friend is willing to go halves on anything we do too it! Bonus, except she gets to drive my GT :-(

Oh on that note its great to drive, get many looks, but it still nothing like the GT to drive around town. So both cars do different things for me. Oh and on the down side, the GTI drinks compared too the GT!

Anyway let me know what you think, and any ideas on wheels etc would be great.

I owe this thread to the previous owner Greg who did seem a little down when he had to let her go.

Haha cheers mate. I wasnt impressed with the traffic after such along trip!

It looks nice good find there, there's a scrapyard near me that has a few Mk 1's in and the scrapyard is pretty cheap for parts too. I might pop down there some time next week so if you need anything just say and i'll have a look, you only live in Guildford don't you

Ooo could you? That would be great. And yep i do live in Guildford so i aint far away. Where's the scrappy?

Looks good.

I was parked in near the polo at Ultimate Dubs. Looked sweet there.

very very very nice! love these things and if they werent so dear i would consider one.

i want a mk1 project. how much that beast set you back?

Dude, the Mk1 looks way better than your described it, actually quite jealous.

Olop looks phat as usual. I thnk the seats in the mk1 could be fixed easily if you could find some new seat covers.

Had a few seats apart in mine time and its really not too bad a fix. Let me know if you need a hand.

All in all tho, good effort! A Mk1 GTi and a spot on Polo Mk3 GT, not doing too bad.

wicked dude, i want it....tho them seats have seeen alot of bums lol

Cheers for all the comments people.

I've had a bit of fun in the past few days with it. Boy does it go compared to the GT, and the sound it makes is mental. I didnt really get to open her up on the way home as my girlfriend was following me home.

Cheers Stu, may have to take u up on the offer sometime as i think i missed out on the ebay last night as i was out drinking.

In terms of a mk5 progress thread i haven't seen one, but check the members gallery there should be some in there.

Oh it it wasnt as much as you would think, mainly due to the bodywork not being 100%. I will take more pic's soon and get cracking on a small few things this weekend

Well I've just found these pic's of the work that the previous owner carried out. It was when he replaced the sills, one of the rear arches and a front wing. Looked in a sorry state

I'm thinking of getting some Borbet T's for her due to this pic that some one added on Edition

Look mental i think. Think the one above is on 16"s (i think), dont think I'm gunna go for that size, as the 14"s would fit the GT too, then i could do a wheel swap from time to time.

There 14's dude lovely stance that! Looks really nice mate nice one.
