I recently put some PhilJ coilovers on my mk4 6n. After a couple of days, I checked the top mounts just to make sure they weren't coming loose. The back struts were fine and hadn't adjusted since the day I fitted them. But the fronts had come slightly loose, I presumed this was the bush bedding in and therefore tightened the top nut back up.

Today on the way home from work, I heard a knocking noise which seemed to be coming from the front of the car when I accelerated. When I got home, I popped the bonnet to see if I could find the problem and again the top mounts were loose.

I unscrewed the top nut and found that it had been wearing the 'top cup'. (as you can see from the pictures below)

Both sides are the same...

Has anyone experienced the same problem?

Do the top mounts have to be 'torqued' up?

Should there be anything between the top cup and the nut, that I am missing?

Any other info on this would be highly appreciated as I dont want to be driving an unsafe car.

are the rubber top mounts underneath in the cup properly? how low are you running it?

Yes they are underneath properly. There is 15mm left at the bottom of the thread.

hmmm, strange one this, the strut should be able to turn indipendent of the spring and hub, so for it all to be moving id say the strut is jammed somehow. is the top spring retainer completely over the strut, where it steps out after he thread, and not caught on the step by the nut above it. sorry this is hard to explain lol

Does the nut need to be torqued up?

there probably is a torque setting for them, have to check the haynes manual for that.

I think the nut that holds the rubber mount down was slightly loose. the one that sits under the cup. suppose if that was loose, there would be some play with the strut, causing the top securing nut to move wearing the nut.

I've tightened everything up again now, ill check again after work tmroo

could put a bit of locktight on there

i shall go check, i didnt tourque mine up, just alot of brute force!!! hehe lol, with the pikey tool

i took mine around a motorway junction island as quick as i could so we shall c if mine are loose

How are they Higgo?

I'm guessing, as my top cups are slightly worn, they will be weak(er). Should I purchase some new ones?

I would, you don't want them breaking over the nut lol!

do you reckon some from a scrapped car will be alright, one with standard suspension on...

or should i buy some new ones from the stealer?

Can someone enlighten me to there set up on the front struts...

does it go...

spring > top mount > bearing > metal plate > rubber > nut > top cup > nut

this is at the top end of the front springs?

them top cups should be cheap from vw aswell. best ringing gsf to see what they say, might be a dealer part.
