so mainly the arugments rage about german vs jap and we seem to hav come to a conclusion!

the only thing that we can rely on from our german cars is breaking down???

ok so what i didnt mention is that people in my college group range from corrados, mk3 golf, ibiza... my dad has also had a leon, golf mk4, friends with mk2 golfs and some older polos, which all you can garentee the break regulary...

i did say german cars... not my mk4 polo especialy... I've figured how unreliable that is tis why i own a jap motorcycle

No offense, the Mk4 Polo is a great car in that they are generally reliable engine wise, they are cheap to buy, cheap to insure and can be cheap for parts...

BUT:

The gearboxes. How could you EVER consider running a car where the gearboxes can last as little as 30k from new?

And fuck me they rot well. Plus, the interior is hideous on non-16vs.

You actually have to look after them. If you look after them, they will more than likely look after you, but the age old german reliability thing comes from older Golfs (and Mk2/3 Polos too no doubt) where you could thrash them all day long from cold, come home, and do the same thing the next day and they would go on and on forever.

polos are cheap for a reason teenages can afford to buy them. If you want better build get a higher up the range car. build quality is alot better in the majority of vws then most jap cars but reliability of jap cars is superiour in most cases

My gearbox is still fine

And mine has no rot.

I love my 6N, clean the throttle housing out every winter or two and that's all you need to do

They're normally quite good at not blowing head gaskets either

That's something isn't it, Mk3 Polos all seem to do the head gaskets regularly. Sure, all cars have their problems, but the VW reliability thing really isn't all it's cracked up to be is it?

It really only applies to Golfs

hells yeah, my mk2 polo gets some serious abuse, offroad, onroad the go pedal is usally flat to the floor sticking to the limits of course. so far the only things I've had to have done to it were the plate for attatching the carburettor to the engine cracked, oh and i've replaced a cv boot.

Love my VW because it's fun,

Love my Toyota because I can do 30k a year in at without worry and have a comfy ride.

Love my Ford because it takes all I chuck at it, never lets me down and keep on plodding.

Hate my VW because it always needs something.

Hate my Toyota because it gets 18mpg round here and no one else likes it.

Hate my Ford because it's arse slow and rusting to bits.

Fucking hell, some of you go on like Polos are super mega ultra reliable.

If they were as reliable as you made out we'd not have a tech section packed with info on how to repair stuff and stop stuff from breaking.

MK4 Polos are pretty poor to be honest. You see so many rusty one, there only 10 years old!!

My college group was split up like this, we had me solely represesnting the Dub scene, my mate that's got a Saxo but is really into the Dub and JDM scene..

Then 1 Ford enthusiast, and 1 Rover enthusiast (they actually exist!)

The rest all love Corsa's and Punto's, and think 17" is the smallest wheel size any car should have

my polo broke down at least once every month for the space of 7-8months! twice in the space of a fornight, my mechanic started to recognise my voice on the phone i called him that much!..... still i fixed it and kept it and I'm glad i did! after crashing it i saw how good the build quality was and the fact i came out a scary situation without a scratch!

polos may/are not be reliable but fcuk me they are safe!! reason i bought another one!! and breaking down just makes me laugh these days as I've become accustomed to it!

Scary thing is, my ultra reliable VW and Jap vehicles are off the road at the minute, and all I've got going forwards is a Ford vans. Admittedly, the back of the exhaust fell off the transit last week, but I'll fix it one day...

I think you'll find that it originally came from the old Beetles and Vans back in the day.

I haven't started my Beetle in nearly a year now, but I bet if I put a battery on it, it would fire up :-)

in my experience...

mk3 GT, only let me down on the hall sender, apart from that got nailed day in day out and kept on taking all i could chuck at it.

mk2 golf 1.3, lets not even go there

mk3 golf 1.4, had it 3 months and not had to even open the bonnet, thrash the tits off it from cold every morning and it never misses a beat, which is a blessing after owning the mk2.

so to sum up, i'm chatting shit and have no point to this post
