heard of the rare beast through a freind i would love to make this my new project. what will i look for when going to veiw it. any rot spots? cheers in advance

The newest mk1's are over 25 years old now, so rust can happen anywhere, so look everywhere.

Main scary places are:

Front wings (expect to pay a bollock each for them).

Inner wings, particularly at the front (repair panels are fairly cheap)

Battery tray (cause it's a polo, the metal is thick here though, and small holes can be plated straight over)

Scuttle panel where the clutch cable goes through (angle grinder and a scrap mk2 shell for a replacement part)

Door bottoms (window seal leaks, door fills with water, water tunnels it's way out)

Wheel arches, particuarly rears (grime gets trapped up here, repair panels are available)

Valances (get battered and eventually go to peices)

Round the windows

Unless originality is important, don't worry to much about the engine, if it runs, it does, if it doesn't, chuck it out and stick a 1272cc in there. Likewise, the interior doesn't matter too much, because mk2 and 3 seats and carpet go in without too much bother.

As far as running gear goes, most of it's the same as a mk2 or 3, so you'll know how to spot problems from your own car, and a lot of parts are common or interchangable with mk2/3.
