hey guys

I hate the "dim" setting on my headlights and hardly ever use it, i use dipped even at dusk and find that i'm just the same as all the other ignorant drivers that drive with full beam on annoying the crap outta everyone else.

Basically i want to remove the "dim" setting and just have my side lights on when i put the first click on the switch.

i've found the wire that needs to be cut/removed (yellow in the corner of the multi plug).

Is there any need for the "dim" setting i.e. legallity or for MOT or whatever????

i was thinking of connecting a crimp so that i can reconnect it if needed!

Iv disconnected mine, you just unplug it. Next to the ECU relays.

The reason for the dim dip is so you can't run just on sidelights (which is illegal for a vehicle in motion).

It's not an MOT test point.

are you sure? some modern cars run on side lights.

for example, my GF's KA has a standard setting that will only turn the side lights on!

What's wrong with driving with dipped all the time? 9 times out of 10 when I get in the car, dipped beam goes on and stays on till I get out again.

well kinda.

on the first click (on the headlight switch) it turns the side lights on and gives 1/2 power to the dipped filament.

i want to remove the H4 bulb from this setting so that only the sidelights are on!

second click will obv turn on the dipped headlights

Oh I see, didnt realise it puts power through to the H4 :S

I've done this on any VW I've owned that has the dim dip system fitted.

Running the headlight bulbs at half voltage will also shorten the life of them.

You also need to disconnect this if you fit relays to upgrade the headlights.

You're looking for a 2 pin plug with yellow wires going to it.

When I asked a professional auto electrican a few years ago, that's how he explained it to me. I've also been told a similar thing by a retired traffic sgt, so I'm fairly confident in it.

My Kia Pride had this on it light would power up to dim when engine was running.

The main reason for it is to stop those pillocks in silver cars who deem that they do not need lights and drive in fog and other undesirable conditions without any form of lighting causing accidents

couldn't find the wire next to the ECU so i chopped the wire in the back of the switch.

popped some crimps on so i can reconnect if needed!

so let me get this right.....

Bit confused here too. So if I have green bulbs for sidelights..if I unplug the dim setting, it will just show the green with the engine on? At the moment it shows the green and a bit of the yellow from H4 when engines on. Is that what this dim plug does?

yes, i've got it set up (with engine on):

click1 - just side lights

click2 - sidelights + dip/full

so if you were to do the same mod, one first click, you'd only have the green side lights on

Yet tales of cars having the same setting from factory? Is it one of those grey areas? I'm not really bothered about just having sidelights on either way, just wondering!

What kind of timescale are you talking with the shorter life? I doubt it would be noticeable with how much I use them but I can be anal about making things last...

did this at lunchtime... good little mod, will plug it back in for mot time though

awaiting delivery of my £2.55 ebay philips bluevision sidelights now...

Where is the plug? Electrical components are not my strong point
