Sorry, being lazy here, did try searching abf and it returned no hits. I have a 99 polo variant (presumably a 6n). Has anybody successfully transplanted a 2.0 abf lump into one of these and if so what problems were encountered.

Is the variant the estate or saloon? If so, should be almost a straight swap. It's the hatchbacks (6n) that have the problems with the bigger engines. I think yours is a 6kv?

What engine is in it now?

I'm sure the diesel 6N engines are huge old things. So should be able to squeeze and ABF in.

the abf is a mk3 golf 16v and the 6n uses the same flor plan so that can only help

An ABF won't go into a 6n without hefty mods - it's the same amount of work as a 1.8T.

But for the Variant, the engine bays are bigger, and already have tall block engines, therefore it should be an easy job.

I don't know, it's either the saloon or estate. Both have big bays though.

i was thinking this the other day. peopel say the 6k is a 100 bhp with a 1.6??? what engine is that then cos the polo 1.6 is 75 and the valver is 100 with a 1.4 .... differnt engine alltogether or am i wrong

The variant is the estate. Both the saloon and estate are the same as the ibiza/cordoba which has a much bigger engine bay and was available with the ABF engine as standard (the cordoba that is, not the polo) The issue with the 6n is the gearboxes are all 085 (even the 1.9 diesel) which makes fitment of something else more difficult. Anyway, if you can get an ABF from a cordoba SX rather than a golf, it should be a straight swap so long as your variant has a tall block already.

Still new at this as i have always had golfs. I have a 1.6 100bhp estate, many of you will know it from this site as it used to be techies. I have also recently bought a vento which has a MK3 golf 16v ABF conversion and i wanted to put this engine into the polo as its running 172b. Just wanted to know if this was going to be a straightforward (are they ever) swap as the polo shares the same front end as the MK3.

I guess this isnt a 6N then, is it a 6K?

Yeah it's a 6K. Shouldn't be a problem but you may need to use the engine mounts from the cordoba SX/ibiza 16v to get it to fit properly.

If it was the saloon,it'd be an idea to use the 2dr Cordoba SX shell,aswell. Then use the Polo boot,lights,etc and create a 2dr Polo loon. Could convert the estate to 2dr,but that's a very specialist job,requiring alot of work. Guaranteed mag feature,though..

That would be quite interesting but seeing as i am only a weekend mechanic it's a bit out of my scope!

Just resurrecting this old post! Please correct me if i am wrong. the 6k shares the same front end as the MK3 golf ! ?

If this is that case then is it not simpler to just unbolt the subframes and swap them over! Would that not get around the issue of the mounts & gearbox??

I am trying to understand all of the pitfalls involved with this type of conversion before i start taking things apart!
