Featured Replies

Well as the polo is off the road for a while i thought i might aswell do a head rebuild and some further port polishing as i kinda rushed the last time i did it.

Anyways just gonna dump a load of various pics into this thread as work progresses probably take the gearbox of later too... Enjoy

Definately some good progress going on there :unibrow:

What's that attached to your slam panel with wiring coming out of it?

horn possibly, why didnt you take the head off aswell as that would have only taken another 30 minutes or so or were you just bored by then?

good luck with the progress dude

I decided just to leave the head till tomorrow something to look forward too and besides i had to go fix my pedal bike

Some more pics, on cylinder number 2 the exhaust valve was black whereas on the rest they were pale brown, does this indicate something wrong?

You can also see on the headgasket that between two of the cylinders theres a burn/black patch on the gasket itself, not sure what to make of it

at 1st glance i thought you had started work on your carpet! lol

I'm feeling the need to whip mine off the GT and give it some love... i think its due...

top work tho mate! 8-)

Did you make note of which valve was for which cam follower? You shouldn't mix them up as they will be worn differently for each cam lobe.

Exhaust valve should be ok, clean it up and re-lap the seat.

How important are these not to mix up :paranoid: ?

Last time i had the head off i put them in neat order on the table but then my mum moved them so they got mixed up then anyways :smirk: , but refitted them and drove it for 15k, the wear looks pretty uniform on each follower (i know there probably not) also there isnt really any scoring on the camshaft, ecp still sell them i believe so if i need to buy new i think i can?

This time i mixed them up just out of laziness this time, maybe a retarded move on my part, owell...

I've just bought some re-lapping paste and suction cup tool of ebay so they will be seated all nicely

Also looking on the gsf website at valve springs and for some of the smaller capacity polo engines pre 1982 theres a listing for "inner valve spring" at 3.80 each, do you reckon these could be fitted to help prevent valve bounce?

With the exhaust being black, doesnt that mean cyl 2 was over fueling?

Cheers for this thread makes me want to get off my arse and rebuild my spare gt head. How are you going about the porting process, i need to do some i think :-)

The springs are the same as for the mk1 golf tall blocks. They will fit and should help a bit, You can get some uprated ones from german ebay quite cheaply as well.

As for the followers, I suppose as long as you leave plenty of clearance for a while till everything settles you'll be ok.

Quick picture update, I've finished all the porting now, cleared pretty much all restrictive material away from the ports, should rev up 10000times better than before, pics dont give it justice, ports are nicely even and have a smooth finish, around 9 hours work with sanding drums + the time i spent a year ago port matching:

(need to give it its final wash after I've lapped the valves in, thats why it still looks dirty)

Received my headgasket kit from ebay, total of £3.50 delivered, included rocker cover gasket and valve stem oil seals too! haha :-o

Good work mate, looks like iv got some catching up to do :-)

Was that headgasket a fluke?? Fookin cheap or what!

Think I paid similar for one. Only wanted the thermostat gasket!

  • 3 weeks later...

Well haven't updated this for a while anyways...

I lapped in the valves rebuilt the head and reassembled the engine, sorry no pics didn't think it was needed, anyways made a short vid of the car revving on the driveway. Cant take it for a spin yet but when i can i will make a new vid then

Definately more wild past 4k, and sounds abit more deep too, not sure how this compares to a normal mk2, i cant remember what mine was like

have you ever found out what this little lump puts out? 70 brake should be a good benchmark to aim for i reckon.

has the financial situation got any better in terms of getting her back on the road? :(
