Hello,

How would i go about relocating a headunit to under the cubby holes under the steering wheel on my mk2?? How do you make the unit secure?? The hole available under the wheel is not a tight fit for the headunit.

Has anyone else relocated a headunit in their polo??

Any help regards this would be great. Pictures and examples of where other people have relocated their headunits to would also be good.

I moved mine into my mk3's glovebox after my first CD player got stolen. I've got the original 14 year old tape player in the usual location so anyone looking in thinks I've only got an old tape player :) All I had to do was drill a hole in the side of the glovebox to pull the wires through (they were long enough) and screw the metal frame the CD player came with to the top of the glovebox with self tappers. For the amount of station/track changing I do (hardly any) it's no trouble to open the glovebox every time to turn it on/off.

Actually I researched wired remote controls and made my own using the original tape player's buttons (so pressing the buttons on the tape player in the dash would do the relevant actions on the CD player in the glovebox), but I rushed making it and it shorted out and I never got round to doing it properly :(

I'll take a pic of the 'install' if you like!

Yeah thats an awesome idea. Problem is though i am itchy fingered when it comes to changing CD's.

Applying the same principle though, all i would need to do is screw the cage for the CD player to whereever i want to place it??

Ok here we are:

Excuse all the other crap and burger king evidence in there!

It's just about a perfect fit. You can see the original wiring coming in from the right hand side which on the mk3 at least is just about long enough.

The remote control (for a Pioneer at least) is very simple - you can just about see a stereo plug on the end of the black and white cable. All you need to do is put certain resistances across the two wires and depending on the resistor(s) used it performs a different function. As I said, the sole reason it didn't work is because I was rushed soldering it and putting it back together and it's a bit tight so something got shorted out and it kept turning the volume up! Not what you want! I've still got the list of functions and resistances if anyone wants them (again, for Pioneer only).

Hope this helps! It's the reason my car hasn't been broken into in Birmingham for the last 2 years :) Just don't go telling anyone...

What a superb idea . I do believe I'm going to have to do this as my stereo was stolen and car was smashed up and its not a very nice experience to say the least .

You could try one of these to mount it with and then get a Sony head unit which has the option to add a remote commander and then mount the commander on your steering column. Great device allows you to control all the head unit functions from the stick and with you taking your eyes off the road! :)

Thanks, that makes the whole job a little easier. Only trouble is the wiring length now as i don't think it will reach to the right hand cubby hole area. Could extend them i guess but........ lazy lol

Actually I bought an underdash DIN tray thinking I'd mount that inside the glovebox then put the radio in it, but didn't need it in the end. You can have it for £10 posted (cheaper than that ebay one!) if you like, here's a pic:

Obviously it's just dusty but I don't think it's been used otherwise.

whats your stereo in the glovebox like for getting warm? Wouldn't think there'd be any air gettin to the heatsink on the back.

Yea I have one of these headunits, and the remote commanders are great. Didnt relocate the HU tho, might do that because I wanna put gauges where the original place is.

Just make sure the remote commander wire doesnt wrap itself around the steering wheel and snap in two on full lock. That would be stupid eh?

Yeah I was worried about that too before I fitted it but I've never had a problem so far, but I rarely have it loud and have only the front two 3.5" speakers powered from it. Really there's no air movement anywhere behind the front face if it's mounted in the normal dash hole but admittedly it's more confined in the glovebox. But you can always leave the lid open on a long journey - the main thing is that it's hidden when parked.

It probably depends on the radio itself, I used to have a VERY crap 'shark' cd player that got really hot on the front face (mounted in the usual dash hole) but this Pioneer unit has been fine so far.

i've had wires melt to the back of one of mine when its in the standard location!

Easiest fix is a 120mm PC fan, 12v. Wire it into the ignition switched and have it drawing air over the heatsink on the back and u should b sorted :)
