Assembling: Corrado 280mm/Golf Mk2 16v 256mm/Audi 80 256mm Brakes

Wondering if some of the Mk2 Golf/Corrado owners can help me put my brakes together. Never worked on brakes much in the past and never on Golf/Corrado items.

Calliper: Girling 54 calliper as found on the Mk2 Golf GTi 16v and Corrado G60.

Carrier: 1985 Audi 80/90 that matches the narrower lug spacing on the Polo suspension. Girling 54 calliper bolts to this.

Disks + Pads: Mk2 Golf GTi 16v 256mm x 20mm disks and pads...only issue being I think I've been give the wrong pads by Volkswagen...more on the later...

The picture below shows some of the parts assembled. I just want to check I am doing this right, however simple it appears. Slider goes into the carrier and then has the rubber boot pulled onto it. Calliper is then bolted to the sliders. Correct?

Now for the pads:

On the far left sits the pads Volkswagen gave me, part number 1HM-698-151-A. After looking into it, it appears these are for cars like Golf/Vento (07/95) or Lupo (05/99). They don't fit into the carrier as they are approx 2-3mm too wide:

I was also given pads by the guy who sold me the callipers/carriers which he apparently used. These are far too small. I thought they might be Polo pads but they don't have the right backing plate to fit onto VWII callipers/carriers. Any idea what they are for?

Finally we have a random set of pads Pidge had in his garage. Pagid pads for an Audi 100. They fit the carrier fine, do these look a little more like Golf/Corrado items?

I should have been given pads with the part number 357 698 151A (Golf Mk2). Will need to go back down to VW and swap them or get a new set and sell the incorrect set...might be of use to Brian for the Vento?

Ok now for the last question...

In the photo with all three pads there is a silver disk with three tabs on it. This is called an "intermediate plate" in ETKA. I understand it goes between the pad and calliper piston, is this right? I can't really see how it is suppose to fit...which side faces the pad etc.?

The flat side of the plate will go against the back of the pads. It should ideally stick to them with the 3 prongs then going into the brake piston holding them in position which also pulls the pads off the discs when the brakes arent on.

Thats how they work on my brakes anyway

As for the pads feck knows min, just go down to VAG, stamp your feet and kick up f*ck till you get somewhere. Your now experiencing what I've been going through with the parts dept at the main dealers for yonkies tav

Tried looking at Green stuff pads to get an idea of whats what as regards numbers:

DP2369/2

Corrado G60 w/ 280mm brakes

Audi 80 Quattro 2.0 (82>86) w/256mm brakes (what my carriers are from)

Audi 90 2.0 (84>86) w/256mm brakes (what my carriers are from)

DP2982/2

Volkswagen Corrado 2.0 (94>96) w/256mm brakes

Volkswagen Golf 1.8 GTi 16v (89>92) w/256mm brakes

Above would tend to suggest the carriers take the Corrado pads...but perhaps the only difference is one set come with a wear indicator and the others don't? Certainly the pads sit on the carrier and don't touch the calliper save for the piston and two prongs that old in the outside pad...so carrier fitment is likely to be the deciding factor?

Perhaps I should just buy Green Stuff as an upgrade/piece of mind as regards fitment.

Went to Volkswagen. Apprently the part number 357 698 151A, which is what ETKA shows as Mk2 Golf pads has been superseded by 1HM-698-151-A...the pads I have that don't fit... The guy was pretty certain that was the case.

So I think I'll have to use the Audi pads from Green Stuff. I PM'd Giorgio and Alex to see what they use.

How I underastand it -

The Polo 16v 256 Calipers are different to the Mk2 Golf ones.

The discs are 256x20 and are the same.

I [also assume everybody] has Audi80 carriers, and like your pictures the pad seems to 'square' to be like the on I have fitted.

On ETKA the Mk4 Polo 16v Pads look just like the Golf ones, yet both look too square to be the ones I have fitted.

The conclusion from my thread about my 256 set up was to shop for mk2 golf 16v.

I have the LUCAS calipers and you have the GIRLING. Could this be the problem?

It's not the calipers that cause the issue though, it's the carriers that the pads won't fit into...as you can see in the first photo of me holding a pad...it won't sit on the little ledge...where the Audi 100 ones I had lying around did...as do yours.

Girling is the manufacturer listed on ETKA...think the calipers are the same regardless of LSUK/Girling. I got these from a boy who had them on his G40. Just the pads thats are causing the issue had everything else bolted together on a strut as well.

If Golf parts fit yours then I think my VW guy is wrong perhaps. Will measure the carrier from pad ledge to pad ledge and perhaps we can compare?

Lucas are recon parts. They grind off any OE markings when refurbished.

The silver plates fits into the piston pots, i.e an itermediate plate between the piston and the pad.

I don't really see whats so difficult with this setup causing issues. I've had both Pagid and Raicam pads fit fine. Just get brake pads/discs for a 1990 Golf GTI 16v, job done.

Well that's what I tried to do...but apparently they were superseded by the pads I have that don't fit.

Width of carrier between pads ledges: 110mm

Width of pads given to me by Volkswagen (distance between vertical sides of the backing plate that sit within the carrier): 112.5mm

Width of Audi 100 pads: 110mm

Width of Giorgio's/known to fit pads pads: ????

Have you tried scraping some paint from the pad edges and rust off the carriers?

It's not quite that small a difference Nick...the Audi pads sit in with a little tap...no way the ones VW gave me will sit in.
