My Day in Pictures

Featured Replies

So after a long battle with venom, I finally got my coilovers this morning! :-D

Yay, start of a good day I thought! So I drove down to meet my mate lil micky in my shiny 9n

and the plan was to procede to Makro to buy lots of sweets to eat whilst fitting the coilovers (Jelly babies were the plan, if you must know)

So on the way to Makro, the car started spluttering  and eventually lost all power, engine check light flashing! :-(

I ended up on the side of the road, car spluttering, pissing down rain. Sure you all know the feeling! I turned the engine off and checked the usual things, loose wires, plugs out, bad earths fluid leaks etc, was all OK. I feared the worse and had to be escorted back home for further diagnosis. When Mr Woods (T100 RAK, 280bhp 9n) stepped in with his fault code reader and picked up a fault relating to cyl one which confirmed my earlier hunch. It was one of these babies!

I fitted a full set just to be on the safe side and because I probably love my car too much!

I was then pretty dis-heartened with the whole thing and decided to leave the coilovers till another day when we had time.

So here's a photoshop of how it should've looked by the end of the day

Hmm how do you adjust the ride height on them?

same setup as a mk4 golf coilover mate. Those are the rears, the fronts are underneath.

weeeeeeeeiiiiiiiirrrrrrd

car looks well low tho :)

Oh so it's the circlipped platform thing that you put up and down? Do you need to pull the shocks out to adjust the height? Are all 9ns IRS or is it just the GTIs?

Aye you should be able to leave the shocks in to adjust the height tbh, just wind them up with the C spanner.

Hopefully i'll get them fitted either tomorrow or thursday night and get some proper lowerage pics up, rather than just a photoshop.

All 9n's are IRS.

Oh and I forgot, also got a seat sport strut brace on the front end now, fitted that last night :)

No damper and spring is separate on a 9n. So the adjuster is on the spring and damper looks like a regular one.

Lucky if you get your car as low as your photo shop. Had any thoughts about your ARB hitting the front drive shafts? Pidge needed to remove his ARB from the front and the rear height adjuster cups to get his car to sit low on his LM reps.

arb shouldn't hit tbh as i've got modified droplinks, something which pidge said he never had?

I'll not be getting it really low untill i've got these tyres scrubbed off and something more stretched in place. I'll go as low as I can though.

So Tav, what was stopping his rear end going down so much? the position of the spring seat?

Pidge was given shorter/longer (which ever are appropriate for lowering a car) drop links with his FK kit...but they weren't suitable for getting the coil overs right down as the ARB hoops still rested on the drive shafts. Better than standard but not good enough.

Wound the rears all the way down and it still sat too high with the 17's, I guess there just isn't a lot of adjustment on the 9n. We removed the adjusters from the rear which put the spring back on its original seat. You might find on your choice of wheels/tyres it works out better...personal preference too I guess. I have a bit of gap on my GT and I actually prefer it to having none.

Hope it works out...seems that with these coil overs there is always something else that can be adjusted or removed to get it lower

I'm sure we'll be able to pikey the car so it sits low enough :)

Its the same set up as Lupos essentially.

There will be ways of making it properly low, you just need to whip the wheels off and take a look at how everything is mounted.

simple, cut the ARB off, my mk4 golf didnt have one for 8 month, on fk coilovers and 18s.

it wont fail a mot either as long as the droplinks and ARB bushes are removed.

ARBs fail to make sense once you get firmer suspension anyway. In fact, my Mk2 is a lot better on bumpy bends without a front ARB. Rear ones are best left though especially on an IRS car (if it has an ARB) otherwise you'll tend to have a lot of understeer.

The 9n doesnt have an ARB on the back unless you buy one from jabbasport.

Oh and burna you grinder whore, theres no need to cut the front arb, it unbolts and slides out, I put a new one in so know how it goes.

well said! /\ /\ /\
