afh in mk1

Featured Replies

Hello,

just got myself a valver for my mk1 shell. Just wondering if there is anything i should take into consideration whilst fitting it with an 8p gearbox? I'm aware that the mk4 compared to the older gearboxes are different but only in respect to existing mk4 drive shafts (the divers side flange being slightly different) but as I'm running it with gt drive shafts i should be ok?

As well as this, what clutch would you guys recomend?

Thanks

(ps this is probably a repost and i am sorry)

Cool conversion 8-) Not sure about the boxes, how you takin care of the block mounting issues?

should just be able to fit a normal early mk4 16v clutch (it's the same part as a g40 clutch).

I was just about to make a thread regarding fitting an AFH into a Mk3. I've had all sorts of naughty thoughts after enjoying the N/A-ness of the GT....but I can't remember what problems might arise from trying to fit the engine. I am sure there is an issue with one of the engine mounts?

I was thinking that AFH + close ratio GT gear box = recipe for rapid progress.

Found this wee video of one in a Mk2: http://video.aol.com/video-detail/polo-2f-...-afh/2556045160

It'll be interesting to see how close the exhaust manifold gets to the rad fan cowling.. I have a picture of my solution to the engine mount anchorage point, but can only send it to a mobile number. Preferably an old pay-g one so i dont give you crank calls, and to someone who'd put the pic up here. And thirdly, use the MK1/2/3 starter-motor and you'll be able to use the lightweight early flywheel.

yeah i know, I'm a bit worried about the clearence issues. Getting a four branch from mr phil J hopefully so ill see when i get all the bits. Looking at maybe using a rad from an old audi 80 or something, due to them being much longer than the original item yet the same core thickness. As for the single engine mount, ill also look at that when the engine arrives this week.

Might put a progress thread up, but then again i might not.......

go on make a progress thread even if its when its finished it will help others that want to follow in your steps

good luck is gonna b a bit of a beast!

Man, I used to have the most awesome video of an AFH Turbo'd mk1 being given death down some mountain pass road.

I can't find it anywhere though. I'm sure it used to be on You Tube but its not anymore.

check the recardo gearbox in dogwoods mk3

i was told that costs the wrong side of 10k. Peice of sex though. Equal lenght driveshafts are the object of my desire

Dogwoods car is a little unusual haha...would like to see how he mounted the engine. Is it the drivers side mount that causes the issue..I would presume so if the gear boxes bolt up fine in a regular install...rather than with his fancy engine.

Ricardo only made a few - but if anyone fancies one, let me know and I'll put you in touch with one of my colleagues... RRP was circa £12k, but might be cheaper now.

The info I've got recently suggests that unless you've got a Polo revving to 9k or so and are happy with 110mph at max rpm then you may struggle to find suitable final drive ratios - they were built for rallying in mind, and not much else.

More I think about it more I can't understand why there aren't more of AFH powered Mk1/2/3 Polo's unless other than the engine mount there is something particularly annoying to contend with?

Here are some German conversions for you... 8-)

my cars getting this done in the summer just waiting to get back from my holiday, then getting engine rebuilt to take a turbo and then in with the engine, i live in portsmouth and we have a few really good vw specialists down here so going to let them stress with any problems lol

Well that exhaust manifold sticks out far more than it needs to,and more than yours is likely to. But even if there's still not enough room, using two small siamesed belt-linked fans,as fitted to many modern cars including the late 90s Polo loon, should be possible. You shouldnt need a cowl with them, just bracketary. The single fan in my Zetec Fiesta was very flat and had no cowl, that'd fit.

I'm based in Fareham... Was the gearbox developed at ricardos uk site? (the one up north, not the shoreham one) its bloody blood nice

mate go to tim's vw up in paulsgrove there suppose to be really good

thought it was just air cooled stuff there? saying that, last time i went there was a year or so ago when it had just opened.

Mikey .......is your statment above based upon fact, knowledge or assumptions ????. The guy knows his onions and will have used some sound knowledge and maths behind his exhaust design. As an example his next incarnation of this car (yes he is spec'ing his next build ) includes a reverse head ie the exhaust will come out the back of the head not the front an give the waste gasses a "straight exit" and the induction will be forced air from the front of the car .......... !!!!

The solution for the engine mounting is to use the two holes at the bottom of the AFH block (power steering pump mtg ?)

Make a sandwhich plate to fit between the "normal mtg" skim about 4mm off the mounting face of the original mtg to allow for the extra thickness of the sandwhich plate and the two bottom holes on the block. The top two can be bolted direct to the blocy the 3rd hole at the top can have a nut and bolt and the bottom two bolted direct ....... Hope that is clear ? if not I can take pics this weekend

Regards David

and again. OMG!

I think it has roots in Ricardo's acquisition of Gemini transmissions, but it was developed at Ricardo's Leamington Spa site - if that's what you mean by the one up north!
