sorry man, that pic on the engine mount will prove very helpfull. To be honest i was pretty embarrassed about my poor geography....

I've been following the build of your hillclimb car. Its looking very promising! Thats the reason why i got myself a 1400, so i can use it in the 1400 class if i ever get round to competing in any events. timed events mainly, maybe slaloms and autotesting. (if the wife and university let me) but for the time being the MSA blue book is a good read i tell thee....

sorry man,

Apology accepted ............ Any info I can give you, just ask ........... no worries.

dont worry, you will be getting bombarded with question after question on the ignition setup!

I'm glad you left it up there as I am getting quite interested in this. Doing a bit of thread crash but at least it is along the same lines. Always difficult trying to picture what someone is saying in text only. If you have any pictures of the mount fitted to a car I would be much obliged.

What you lot been drinking? I'm still talking,on topic, about fitting an AFH with tubular manifold into a road-going MK1. In which case,no the manifold does not need to stick out that far,at the expense of no rad fan - the MK3 has a slightly longer front..

Tav,i sent you a pic of my proven ultra-rigid billet steel bracket for fitting the engine mount. Soz if the MMS didnt work,no email

the manifold does not need to stick out that far,at the expense of no rad fan - the MK3 has a slightly longer front..

as mentioned above. This dude appears to know his stuff. What do you base that comment on?

project2006 - if you would as kind as to further enlighten me via pm with more photos I would be much obliged.

but just to throw a spanner in the works - why not use a 1.6 bottom end with the 1.4 16v head?

alternatively - why is this a better conversion over a well set up G40? Besides entry into n/a race series

dont get me wrong, i completely missed what project 2006 wrote, which doesnt make me ungrateful/Arrogant/ignorant , it just makes me a dosey idiot, and didnt realise until after i posted that he had left a photo

As for that engine mount, i will post some pics up in a week or so time, as i wont see the lump until friday.

The reason for the 1.4 choice is the fact thats its a cheap and easier way of obtaining power, as well as this, i think georgio hit the nail on the head with it being perfect for any club event in the under 1.4 class. Although this class is competitive, bigger engine sizes mean tonnes of money spent, which i dont have (yet =] )

By the way, thank you to everyone who has showed an interest.

Well if you tuned the engine well it would give the benefits any NA engine gives over one with forced induction. Throttle response for one. Less tourqey more managable power delivery. Throttle bodies would be awesome.

or carbs :-p

Carbs are dirty, fuel injection for the win.

Okay,I've just checked the title of this topic. Giorgio,i said nothing to criticize that manifold in its place,or the skills of said person. So please stop suggesting i have. What i said was that manifold clearance will be interesting in the smaller engine-bay of the MK1,which this topic is all about. Something you seem to be completely ignoring. Hence the point about low profile cooling fans.

............ megajolt and ford EDIS bits or a distributor from an MH ? enhine the one with a vacume advance on it ...... not ideal but it works upto about 6.5k rpm.

It may well be beneficial for the manifold to come out that far,it'd be even more beneficial if the pipes came out and round in one big smooth sweep. But it is not necessary to have it like that to make the car run well.. Incidentally, you ask about the G40 engine? Again, space - the front panel has to be considerably chopped open, and the charger sticks out the front of an early MK1.

You do realise the manifold is only that shape either to a) satisfy someones design or b) to clear some sort of cross member that has been added? So it really doesn't have a bearing on any other persons conversion.

mate ........ lighten up, its not worth spoiling your tea for. This is not real stuff like third world famaine or war and stuff its only a fun forum.

Ah,now you can read? Well come on Giorgio, you did quote me for saying that such a big manifold isnt necessary at the expense of a cooling fan,and asked me to what that was based on? Now you're suggesting I'm getting spilling my tea, though i have not been irate at any point. And now its time for a subject change to world peace? You're not wrong there..

Mikey - that last reply wasn't by Giorgio...

Can we keep this civil please guys, or this thread'll disappear.

Never realised posting on forums is so scary!

Project2006 yeah i have the whole engine loom, complete with ecu, inlet mani, throttle body etc so i could get the engine running using that initialy as i want my car done for the summer. Saying that, i have a set of twin 40s, cbr600 carbs and a complete mh ignition setup to hand if my plan changes. The main factor being time and money at the momemnt, as i work away during the week and i have student fees and whatnot to pay. In the not to distant future, i plan to spend a bit of money on the engine so watch this space. :ninja:

I've just read on Club Lupo it is possible to use the internals from 1.6 GTi in the 1.4 AFH? Anyone know anything more about this? Does CR etc. remain unchanged? I believe Jez might have done this on his Mk4?

Maybe a full moon is about due ............

Quite a few people have done it. The Mk5 runs fly-by-wire ignition which means full wiring conversion plus more if I understood it correctly. GTi 1.6 bottom end with old school mk4 throttle set up on the 16v head.

Cam belt is a problem apparently. A few parts need machined too.

Jez is most definately your man.

Fly by wire Ignition- I've GOT to see that :unibrow::lol:

The head and bottom end don't match from what I've managed to gather. It's a 1.4 16v engine with 1.6 internals...if someone in the know could confirm this either way?

Found these quotes which explains a little:

With a change of crank and rods from the 1600 to the 1400 and some new pistons you get 1600 or a little more with an overbore.

It's not too tricky but there are some bits which I ended up getting fabricated like the exhaust and inlet manifold. Apart from that it was off the shelf.

you want a 1.4 head and block and put the 1.6 internals in it

Be nice to know if it needed any work to the block, CR, capacity etc...
