Oh yes its a big business now :) and not just people who show their cars. Some of the work that these guys can do is amazing...

See I'm not into all that, i take my car down the local garage, use the Simonz hot was washer thing, then give it a blast down with hot wax, then a rinse off, £3 and jobs a goodun

maybe once a year i'll give it a good waax, if I'm lucky

I used to do it myself, but because I'm between st helens and manchester at the moment i find it hard to get the time to do it properly, and more the fact i cant be bothered.....

The only thing detailers really have which you wont have is expensive waxe's and polish's and hardners .

To be honest the best thing to do is get a clear coat form a garage .

I know of a place in Derby that will throughly clean your car then spray a clear coat on your paintwork and bake the car to harden it .

They will then give it a good wax to seal the shine .

You end up with that new car look . Superbly smooth bodywork too.

Definatly worth it once every other year i think .

I don't really agree with this. Yes they have access to good polishes, wax's, etc but they also know how to use them. You can really damage your paint work if you are using some of these products and you don't know what you are doing. Removing the whole of the clear coat is a possibility leaving the only choice a full/part respray. Plus different type of paints needs different types of products to get the best out of the paint or to the required finish.

I can't imaging that getting the car re-clearcoated is cheap and its something I wouldn't want to do once a year and if you do do it once a year then you will need to maintain the paintwork some how as I don't think it will stay nice and clean, shiny, scratch and swirl free for 12 months (I wish it would though!!!! :) )

Detailers also deal with much more than just the paint work they deal with the complete car (engine bay, wheels, tyres, bumpers, interior, light, etc)

Not at all! Detailers check your paint depth and everything to ensure the they use the best combination of products, they also know how to properly use polishing machines etc.!

agreed with doug on this i love cleaning my own car, "detailing" lol seems a tad excessive if you ask me.

Fair play if you've got something worth doing like the ferrari in the link but on a polo? gotta be kiddin man, by the time you've forked out for 12 months worth of detailing you're probably half way to a respray.

Oh don't get me wrong.. I love cleaning my car in fact I have never taken either of my cars to a 'detailers'

What I am saying is that the things that these guys can do would far outshine anything the average Joe off the street could do. I know there are people on here that are really good at detailing their cars and this was shown at the polo show. So there is nothing stopping the none 'professional' learning how to do this. With the right tools, patiences and most importantly knowledge the effects can be amazing.

Granted it can be expensive and I'm sure the Ferrari detail ran into the thousands (it was 5 days after all) but there are levels for all budgets and requirements. You say that "by the time you've forked out for 12 months worth of detailing you're probably half way to a respray." which might be true but once you have that respray it will look great initially but you have to maintain that shine/quality, it doesn't look after itself.

I feel detailing is about maintaining good paintwork & remember detailing is not just about the paintwork.

I couldn't spend that amount money on my Polo but there are people who have spent thousands on their polo and they want it looking the best it possibly can, Personally I'm more about the 'Go' rather then the 'Show' :) but I understand it and appreciate a really nice presented car, look at Ultimate Dubs. I'm sure a lot of the cars there had been detailed and probably on a maintenance plan too, which keeps the car looking as good as possible.

I'm sure some people spend more on their polo's than some people spend on their Ferrari's (but that's a whole different topic!!! :) )
