Iv got a 60/60 kit on my mk3 from PhilJ and I'm running, 175/60/13 tyres. So got abit of arch gap to play with. The kit is good on smooth roads but on HUDDERSFIELD roads its too stiff, no chance of putting power down. I saw a site a few weeks ago selling polo springs, different rates ect. I dont want to go soft or anything just a slightly softer spring that will absorb the bumps better.

Anyone know what best the best spring would be for this?

I'm thinking of only doing the fronts, thats where the problem is.

a spring with more coils in it should be good on comfort....

i recommend eibach springs.. theyr amazing...

and your definateley going to need some good shock absorbers... they play a huge part in absorbing bumps... short shocks arent very effective..

h/r loads better ride quality thats why they have german tuv approval

Its not just the springs, the damping rates on the PhilJ kits are quite brutal.

You should just get the H&R Cup Kit from Phil, it's awesome once you've broken it in.

As above, PhilJ dampers on their own are very very stubborn. PhilJ shocks are really only good for slammed cars which can't afford much suspension travel over unexpected rough roads.

i love the phill j suspension, great for lift off oversteer! doesnt bother me thats its really stiff. most of my driving is done on cross country b roads on twisty bumpy lanes and i really like the handling. still i wouldnt recommend them to anyone wanting comfort!

Dont get me wrong, i dont mind the stiffness. But theres some roads where you just think, this is rediciulas lol i cant even put 80bhp down.

Will probally just live with it, cant justify spending too much more on the polo sadly.

Bilstein!! - their so damn comfortable... i used to have this set up on my own polo... it was more comfortable that the original suspension setup... even though it was lowered

why do you think Mazda's RX8 ... uses eibach springs and bilstein shocks... hmmmmn i wonder

otherway round u muppet lol ... bilstein shock absorbers... and eibach springs... the car will handle like a dream after that... but maintain a super high level of comfort at the same time!

Thank You! People seem to think a brutally stiff ride makes their car handle like a formula one car.

I'm in total agreement with you guys. I just got a philj 60mm kit, very hard. O.k. on a smooth roads, but skips over bumps. not enough compliance. Also if you hit a pothole, sends big shock loads thru the chassis, can't be good.

So after that learning experience I'm looking for something else too... How do the spring rates of standard G40 shocks compare to some of the alternatives? Anyone know?

As far as I'm aware the G40 shocks and springs are slightly lower, so might have a different rate to the others but i doubt its enough for the car to handle resonably well.

I find with the philj kit the car doesnt want to handle smoothly, but you can make it handle ok you just need to really work the car.

Rather then go smooth into a tight bend, i give it abit of rough and it makes a big difference

How are Spax springs and shocks, compared to the PhilJ kit?

Can't go wrong with Eibachs and Koni yellow adjustables.

How can you complain for springs for under 200 quid, i've heard alot about phil j's, alot of people on here running them and their not complaining. if your looking for comfort try weitec or venoms? get the wallet ready though..
