Right guys.

I built this for my AS Design Technology project:

But the main issue is that I didn't really have a 'client'. The client was me... which doesn't make for an interesting folder!

So for my A2 project I'm looking for something challenging and interesting to do for someone else. That doesn't necessarily mean that person has to buy it off me at the end... I just need someone I can be in communication with throughout the project, get some information on and get some opinions from. Obviously being in my area would help as you could come and have a look in person and try it, but it's not critical with internet/email etc.

I'm experienced with metal work and not too shabby at the old wood work, but the main criteria is that it has to interest me and I have to enjoy and want to make it. Got access to a lot of equipment so that shouldn't really limit anything, and it doesn't necessarily have to be complicated.

Note that things that interest me mainly involve cars! Something based on a mk2 polo would be good as I have knowledge of and access to one :p

and A2 DT projects are annoying, so much paper work :(

for my as dt i made a soap dish holder, shit me that was exciting. A2 I've made an inlet manifold for bike carbs. designed it on 2-d design, cut in blue foam then cast and welded. Doesnt allow much designing but making and research are good areas

That let you build that at as? . . lame! Mines nearly all paperwork and i got about 3weeks to build a proto-type. But then mines product design :S

lucky for you i teach design tech at as/a level. unlucky for you is youve left it canny late ha ha.

you dont necsessarily need to have a client, but in your research you need to have evidence of looking further afield than the end of your nose. what other research have you done? have you looked at existing products? have you looked at your target market? who's gonna buy this? where would it be sold? how much will it cost? what the hell is it for? that kind of thing? the way its put together is sort of irrelevant, depending on what subject you are taking but I'm guessing when you say D&T you mean product design? unless you have choosen manufacturing/engineering then the manufacture of the product plays a bigger role. you could go to some local fabricators and look at how they create such a thing taking photos, writing up an interview with someone as part of your research. build the thing take it or take photos and ask them to analyse it. write letters and emails, and DONT throw them away, put them in your A3 folder!!! i can try and help you but you need to be a bit more specific as what to what stage your at, because at this time of year you should be past the research part, although its not too late to take some steps back!!

another thing to think about is what did you actually design? because that go-cart to me doesnt look any different to what i would expect a go-kart to look like! you need to show off your innovative skills and highlight areas you have improved. try:

picking something your interested in

something where you can recognise a problem

know your target audience

dont pick something shit that is gonna make you slip into a coma out of boredom half way through

dont be afraid to try something new. if your an amzing welder dont be afraid to make something out of timber.

these are just a few things to think about....

hey sweetheart am only 24 myself, done plenty student life....

I made a Water feature for AS product design for myself lol. Also got to hand in my A2 project for the 22nd of this month, Making a coffee table and got soo much practical and folder work left to do!

Lol I've finished my product, just have to give the finishing touches to my "test rig" and do a mountain of paperwork. All in for wed's!

Hah. I remember A level product design. All I did was think of what I wanted to make, and link it to a client somehow..just like everyone else That way though, it's a bit annoying to link it back to your specification all the time

I was told it doesn't so much matter what you make (to a certain extent), as whats more important is how you back up you're ideas with target audience requirements and your specification. Making all your paper work flow and relevant is the main thing..

Obviously you can't just go out and build something that copies something already out there..maybe adjust it for your own chosen target audience.

believe me if you take it further you will look back and think fuck me that was a piece of piss, i could do it in a week. it really isnt that bad and it really isnt that much work. go to uni when they dont hold your hand, dont tell you what to do and then say there is too much paperwork. then i'll feel sorry for you

But wheres the fun in that? can't we moan now and then even more if we go to uni?

Adam how about you design a simple sump guard like the OEM fit ones that you can manufacture in a batch of say, 10-20 and do a group buy at the end of it?

I don't mind being the "client" I can help you, did A level product design (and got about 85% lol) so some of the stuff I know is like jumping through hoops for the examiners!! I think a sump guard is a good idea as many people have lowered cars and want to protect their engines. Also I live in devon so can take some photos of some MASSIVE pot holes haha... gimme a pm if you're interested.
