Featured Replies

so, if the car is registerd to my name, but hes the main driver on the policy, its legal?

pretty much it's near enough impossible for them to prove youdrive it more than him!!

hmm, I've just founda bullket point saying " the vehicle must be owned and registered by you" and when i filled in the application it tells you to "tell us about YOUR car" so i sence a snag lol

do it and sign it over to your old man backdated 1 day

you will find now, that to cut down this kind of thing, the 1st driver must be the registered keeper...

if you want to go down the line of 2nd driver sign the car over to our dad, then when you get your own insurance sign it back over... problem with this is it adds dmore keepers onto the car so makes it look older or more worn out tha n it is

call dvla tryn say the log book was sent off under the wrong name mena b you are dads car hopefully theyl take that n change it... n from there its better to have it in the name of the 1st driver as the insurance companies r fully aware of the fact people try this all the time

also in the eyes of insurance companies if the 'maindriver' is not the owner then your policy is void.. i tryed it before..

my name on v5 my mums insurance policy with me as a listed driver.. on my car..

both the police and insurance said this voids the policy and to amend it immediatly by changing logbook to my mums name..

insurance companies have got clever and wise to this, and now in my mums name, me listed or my name ther is very little difference in price..

TBH you can have your dad as policy holder and you as named driver( tho as said car will need to be in his name). BUT, and its a very big but, if they find out you drive the car more than your dad (in the case of a claim) then they will void your cover. they do have ways of finding out, i know people who have been caught out before. take it as a warning, but the final decision is yours.

personally tho i would do it under your own name and start earnin your NCB, you will be grateful for it in the long run

i think it depends on the insurance company. i have 2 cars, both owned in my name. First car is insured with me as first driver and missus as second driver, and me as owner. so i use my no claims.

Second is insured in missus name, with me as a driver, and me as the owner- and using her no claims.

If you have your dad as the main driver you cant use his no claims from another policy... just in case you didnt know that already. you being the owner and him being the main driver shouldnt cause any problems- but dene is right- if they can prove you drive it more than your dad could be a bit dodgy- up to you if you wanna risk it

have you tried putting you mum and dad as named drivers on your policy? halved my mates premium!

If you declare yourself not the main driver, however you are and your parent won't drive it nearly as much as you.

It is technically illegal as it is fraud.

However, no one can proove it and fronting (as it's known) is what i'm going to do.

Just sign over the car to your mum/ dad, put them as main driver, you as a named driver and you'll get a quote you can stomach.

What he says really .. I did this at forst and diddnt have any trouble ..

I would say get your own insurance as soon as you can afford it though ..

Its perfectly legal to have insurance in your dads name as long as you are a named driver on the insurance, with you owning the car. As long as when you speak to the insurance company you tell them this is what your going to do. Most insurance companys dont do this kind of policy but I know Zurich insurance defintley do it as thats what I am on not on my G40 but my run around.

hope this helps

yeah i used to do this until about 3 years ago as loads of companies stopped doin it i was the keeper but my dad the main drivers etc ... heard direct line still do something along them lines for my first yr for a standard polo i used bell and then went on to brentachre for my g40 both the cheapest companies i could find by a mile !

i almost got shafted with this when i crashed my **cough** 106 **cough** my name was on log book but mum as main driver....

ended up costing me an extra £250 on top of excess (which i didnt get back wen got excess back)

so best bet is to put it all in dads name and go with someone who offers 'no-claims discount' to 'named drivers' like Direct line

your fine mate just no ncb for you!

i've had my dad as main driver for the last 7 years, saved a fortune. but not all insurance companies will insure you unless you are the registered keeper.

in the last 7 years i've paid a total of 3400 in insurance, including this current year being 320.

where as my mate paid 2200 in his first year. (he bought the car for 1700)

i will be 25 very soon so will be getting the insurance on my name now, been gettin quotes for around £500ish without any ncb. so not too bad.

anyway theres loads companies now giving named driver ncb's

Up until recently both my wife and I have insured ourselves as main drivers on each others' cars. I was with Admiral on her 6n2 and she was with R&SA on my Mazda. Declared everything up front and never had any problems (but mind you, we haven't had to make any claims). Last time I was looking, confused.com did say some insurers refused to quote for me as I wasn't the registered keeper, so it looks ilke it's down to the individual insurer.

Bear in mind that "main driver" means "person who drives it most". So if you will be driving it more than him, you should be the main driver. Even so, you might find your quote is cheaper having a parent as a named driver on your policy.

I would say that your situation is legal, as long as your insurer says it's OK.

Well...

I had the same problem when i first got insured I'm second driver on my policy ma mudga is main and owns the car ( yer right!!) lol but as everyone else has said it will give u a chepaer quote and its hard for them 2 catch you out.

I'm 18 and got a valver an i live in east london an my insuance wernt that bad.....

That ncb isn't transferrable from DL, it's basically so named drivers when they get their own policy will stick with direct line as it's where their ncb has been built up.

just sign the car over to your dad/mum and put them as the main driver. Theres no way i could run my car at uni without doing that, and they arent going to be able to prove that i drive it more than them IF i was to do that :ninja:

Do you know if you were to stay with DL another year, then the no claims would ALL be transferable or only the year you have been on your own policy?
