Ok, my G40 came with 14" Golf Clipper alloys. I've now got a set of original BBS 13" alloys, but they wont fit. It appears the calipers are far too big, resulting in there just isn't enough room. Also the discs are ventilated - this wasn't standard was it?!

Can anyone tell me what i need to do. I presume i will have to get smaller calipers and possible smaller standard discs? Anyone know what i should be asking for/size of the parts?

Vented discs are standard on G40s yes. There is a chance you have a 256mm discs conversion which would indeed render the 13" BBS useless.

To fit the 13s you'll need to source a G40 standard brake setup. People will pay good money for your setup if it is 256mm. Best bet is to measure the discs.

Thank you i'll do that. Are the front discs and calipers the same on the GT models as the G40s?

No, GT front brakes are the same as any other normal '87> Polo. Only the G40 came with vented discs and different calipers.

Thank you. So what size are these discs and where can they be bought from/how much are they? So if the discs are 256mm, i take it i don't need to replace the calipers?

You'll need vented 239mm discs and VWII calipers. The calipers for your larger discs will be different.

It's worth noting that not all 13" wheels will clear the standard G40 brake setup, are the wheels you have genuine G40 5.5Jx13" BBS RAs?

I have a better idea, instead of messing about changing disc's and calipers etc just let me have the BBS off you and all will be ok, trust me I used to be a doctor!

Just checked, and the code on em is 6Jx13H2, so i take it there not gen G40 ones Not sure what the difference is if they're both 13" alloys. Sorry for my ignorance i'm not very knowledgable on these matters. I'm gutted as these wheels are immaculate. Is there anything i can do to get em to fit?!

Depends where they're not fitting. If they only catch slightly on the inside of the spokes,you may be able to simply use standard carriers (the seperate bracket the caliper is mounted on). If the caliper is fowling the spokes,you could use a hub spacer. But if the arched part of the caliper is fowling the inside of the rim,then you have bigger brakes,probably the 256's as said.. Cont..

Can you post pictures of them? They might not even be BBS wheels...

Id get the tape measure out if i were you,because if the discs are 256's then the carriers that hold the calipers are much sought after - they can change hands for three figures,and id like a pair myself. Changing them for the G40 setup is easy - used VWII calipers are common as muck and there are still plenty of the standard 86-94 carriers about (fractionally different to G40,but work the same).

Yeah they are 256mm discs. I got a standard 5.5J G40 wheel, and it wouldn't fit. Swapped my 13" BBS with Steve for his 14", but i just don't think they suit a G40, far too big. Out of interest i even tried a ATS cup wheel, and they fitted!!!

I'm going to go for original set up, and find a set of G40 wheels - again lol.

14s were an optional extra on the g40 and with the right tyres look smashing on a mk3! keep the brakes, its gotta be worth it, being able to stop without using the backs of other cars!

Why do you want to fit brakes that are less safe than the ones you got?

175/60-13 has got a diameter of 542mm

185/50-14 is 540mm

Hold on, didnt mk2 Golf GTI 8Vs have exactly the same vented discs and callipers?

Golf II GTI 8v have 239mm discs

Golf II GTI 16v from 88 and up have 256mm discs

Most 13's wont fit over the 256mm brakes, thats is correct. 86c Polo's was never delivered with 14's

noticing this topic i have mk2 golf gti brakes on front of mine so am i best checking the disc size aswell before i stick my 13" bbs's on?

you sure they're not mk1 golf gti brakes? thats what i'm running.... 239mm, its the same setup at g40s.
