its a nice easy job, you will need the ecu, engine bay loom, and the headlight loom from the gt.

please guys surely someone else could offer a helping hand or advice

I'm no mechanic so even if someone could point me in the right direction in forums i have looked but i might of missed vital info

You will need the GT inline fuel pump from the rear of the car and basically everything from the engine bay.

As you have a donor car this will be a seriously easy conversion for you to do. There is a thread in the faq outlining what is needed for the GT conversion.

Engine, engine bay loom, ecu, inline fuel pump, exhaust (as is larger bore i believe). Wiring will not be difficult just label everything on the donor car before you remove anything.

I am going to be doing this into my mk2 soon and i have very limited mechanical knowledge, giving it a go anyways.

Gather all the relevant information you may need and then get the engine out. Give everything a good clean and service and then whack it all in.

when you say "engine bay loom" does that mean i dont have to touch any of the wiring behind the dash?

also do i need to take driveshafts?

I'm pleased to say it started first time in over five years today with two turns of a key :)

thanks guys for your help so far... alot of irritating questions to come I'm afraid

First check the Donor cars engine is good.. start it up, get it running, take it up and down a private road, check the gearbox is good. check that it doesn't over heat. Does it use any water/oil? The last thing you want is to spend all that time and effort and put a dud engine in.

Well I'm not 100% on the process to put the GT in another Mk3 but its easier than putting it in a mk2 like what I did and I found that rather straight forward. This is by no means a complete list its just what I can remember and I accept no responsibility if its wrong!

1 - Label all the wires and pipes up (and the fuel lines) up. You don't need to know what they do, just where they go. VW have been quite good with this as most of them are unique.

2 - Once labelled up take lots of photos. All the connections, where pipes go, etc. You prob won't use half of them but it will give you peace of mind. And don't fall into the mistake of thinking you will remember cause you know you wont! take a picture it only takes a few secs! :)

3 - Spend some time getting to know your donor car... (No car loving!! :) ) Get underneath it have a look around, look how things go together, Just take time learning the thing. Compare the differences to the donor car and your car.

4 - Read the Haynes manual process for removing the engine. We all know its not always right but I think the engine removal process is ok. Then after reading it go back to the car and look how you would do each step. (Repeat this many times!! :) )

5 - Gather your tools. Set of spanners 8-18mm, 6point Socket set, extension bars and wrench (You can use 12point ones but I am always scared of rounding things off), Screwdrivers, adjustable pliers (to get the hose clips off) Splined (star shaped) tool to get the splined drive shaft nuts off (attaching drive shafts to the gearbox). Also a Decent Torque wrench (to tighten up the nuts and bolts to the correct torque). And finally an engine hoist (or 2/3 mates and a piece of 2x4 :) ), Car Ramps/Axle Stands (or both). I think that's it for tools.. but I sure other people will have others :)

6 - Start removing the engines as per the Hanyes manual.

7 - Once the engines are out you can get started removing the engine bay wiring looms. The engine bay loom is everything that plugs into the fuse box and you basicallt remove the 3 screws holding it in and remove the 3 sockets on the back. you will prob have to remove the lower glove box and remember which socket when where.

8 - Once the looms are out you can put the donor engine loom into your car. You will notice how the loom has kept its shape so it will point you in the direction it wants to be laid out. (Which is nice!)

9 - You will also need to fit the ECU from the donor car which is near the fuse box.

10 - while the engine is out I would do 2 things to it. a) Change the water pump & b) change the cam belt. Its so much easier to do with the engine out of the car. Also I would think about changing the rubber engine mounts if you think they are on the way out.

11 - Once this is done you can get the engine back in the car. And once in plug it all back in.

12 - as has been said I think you will have to add the inline pump and stuff at the back of the car... I think Someone might have to confirm this bit as I don't know what a std mk3 has so sorry. If you do then you will have to run an +ve feed to the rear of the car to power the in line fuel pump. You also need an earth which you be sourced in the boot area or by running a cable back to the back of the fuse box. You can see on the GT the whole in the floor on the RHS whihc cables going though it, these are the in-line fuel pump wires. Also you will then probably have to uses the fuel lines of the GT as I believe they are bigger (They are compared to a Mk2) again some one will have to confirm this.

13 - Diagnostic ports - These plug into the sockets on the back of the fuse box. Again I don't know what they are like on a std mk3 but I had to add the wires on the mk2 (Again can some one confirm?)

14 - I think you are now ready to go (unless I have missed out a big step some where?) It might take a few attempts as the fuel lines will be empty but hopefully it should fire up.

This is just a very rough guide and its was based off my experience of converting my mk2 to use a GT engine so just use it with a pinch of salt!

If you want to have a look I did a build thread which shows most of the steps and the issues with the wiring but remember it is for a Mk2 so I believe thare a few slight differences. My Build Thread!

Hope this helps a bit :)

You can use the Std drive shafts :)

Just to add to my previous post.. you could ignore everything I have just said and clean the GT up (as its a nice colour) and just use that. It would be so much easier!!!! :)

i didnt mean std driveshafts i meant the ones from the 1.0?

i have labelled everything now the car and box is good so time to start taking it apart but i took the pipe from the air filter off just before it goes into the throttle body and there is a wee bit of oil.. should i be worried?

he kneaded a crap

Yes the drives shaft from the 1.0 will be find as I think they are the same as the GT ones.

As for the bits of oil. I think that's OK.. As i believe it is a breather pipe.. i think.... :)

how many miles has the gt done? i still think you could really clean that up and make a good sale on it, then buy a gt engine with the money left over?
