Was crawling under the car a little while ago, and noticed some of the rubbery underseal has the odd gash and chunk missing, so was wanting to repair/ patch it up. As the original VW underseal has done a good job thus far, it seems a good idea to patch it using the same stuff. So, firstly, has anyone used it and how much did you pay for it? My ETOS suggests the price is about £11 a litre.

From what I can gather, it's supposed to be applied using a pneumatic gun, but I was wondering if you could still apply it by brush (or similar)?

On a side note, is this the same as the stone-chip coating on the sills, as it appears to be different? The stuff spayed onto the sills appears harder and less rubbery than the underseal on the floor pan. I was wanting to repair the rust on the bottom of the front arch again this summer and consequently the coating usually found on the bottom of the wing will need replacing.

me !! I've bought some but its not the rubber stuff. its basically shultz, it probably is actually but badged by vw. i searched for the rubber compound stuff but nobody could find it as its applied with heat and baked so I'm told in the factory... i paid about 11 quid for the shultz from vw and you will have to use a compressor because of the way the tin is. its the stuff thats applied on the lower sills over the primer/sealer/paint > on the gt's an g40s to give a black look under the lower trim, it goes hard over time though...its not paint. thats what i bought it for originally although i did coat the underside with it too. its fine as an extra protection but not great over bare metal i wouldnt have thought.

With it being quite vulnerable to stone chips, I wanted something quite tough...like what was already there. From what I understand of Schutz (never used it before) it probably wont withstand stone chips and can't be painted over.

I've since done some more searching and Hammerite do Stonechip Guard, which sounds more like what VW used. It's available in white and can be painted over.
