i dont have much experience, but just wondering if you would respray a car yourself with highstreet spray-can paint?

whatabout just the bumpers?

or so you guys always go professional?

I have done, but I wasn't looking for an excellent finish. Its good enough for me. The car is just a runaround anyway.

If you want to do it yourself just take your time, but you will never get the finish anywhere near that a professional would.

Rough guide is £70 a panel. Thats the minimum I would pay anyway.

I sprayed my boot, under the door trims and the little rectangles under the rear lights on my mk3, its not a super professional finish but from anywhere over a metre away it looks as good as. Like said above just make sure you take your time and get it rubbed down properly.

Do it, if it all goes wrong just get it done properly.

You can actually get surprisingly good results with rattlecans if you buy good paint and take your time. Make sure your prep is really good, have a good thickness of paint and when you are finished wait for your laquer to dry for a good few days, then flat it down with wet and dry and spend a long time polishing it up with G3.

Rattle cans are acrylic. You can get it glass-smooth by laying on a few coats,then taking off a couple with 1500 wet paper,then 'polishing' the scratchy matt result with Tcut,then polishing that with Autoglym super resin. But even after all that,glass-smooth as it may be,it'll never be anywhere near as glossy/shiney as proper paint. Because its acrylic. As long as you're fine with that,great.

just bumpers - Yes whole car - No give it a try look round on the net and find how tos but make sure your prep is GOOD

i rattle canned the bottom half of one of my old polos

finish wasnt too bad

as mikey said, with a bit of wet flatting, you can get a reasonable finish

you can see the bottom isnt as shiney as the top, but thats just coz i hadnt wet flatted the paint at that point. i had also painted the top of the rear quater panel, but i had flatted and polished that back up

Think i will have a crack in the future although a mate has a compressor at the unit and spar gun . Just need to make the booth up to keep all the dust out .

my sisters bf has just resprayed his whole car, a mk5 fiesta, matt black using cans, turned out pretty good. like other people have posted, the preparation is the most important part x

thing is rattle cans aint that cheap really...id suggest you look at lending or renting a compressor for the weekend and spraying it with a gun, a decent spray gun sprays alot nicer than cans and will lay down a nice thick coat of paint

matt black is fine outta rattle can but anything other then that is not as like the others say you wont get the finish

by prep you guys mean sanding basically? sanding and primer?

i would give it a go, maybe not on a newer car

i sprayed the boot of the ibiza (the inside, and wheel well) and it came out really well, halfords paint is surprisingly good

i have all the kit but i'd get frustrated when i get the smallest run so no plus theres always the chance it could all go tits up lol that and my brother does bodywork so i have a free sprayer lol

i WILL be respraying mine myself very soon but not with cans

Spray it in a controlled area, you dont want dog hairs or flys landing on your wet paint. Use an airbrush and compressor for even paint flow, heat up the paint can, set it in a bowl of warm water.... do a lot of preparation first, be patient and allow about a week for a good finish....

...alternatively get it done professionally!!

Edit: at least pro's wont return it to you unless they feel it is perfect, they're too scared of word spreading they did a half-assed job!

i only used ten cans of paint to do mine, so cost less than £60 to do, much cheaper than a bodyshop and the finish was good enough for the condition of the rest of the car!

Its not about how good you can get the Finnish its about money £60 do it your self and if your body work is like mine dings dents rust it can only be better at the end of the day

or

you pay a body shop £800 to £2000 for a professional paint Finnish and you get a guaranty that at the end the paint will be what you want if its not they have to do it till its flawless!

£60 or a shit load more than what your car is properly worth and you will properly never see a return if you sold the car.

what do you guys mean by prep?

is there a step by step guide anywhere? the ones i have foud want you to pay...

its just the bumpers i want to do.

should be getting a full respray in summer for around the £400 mark hopefully, which is quite cheap. i reckon i'll do all the prep but id make a hash of it doing it myself and i dont have enough patience. I'm presuming you have to declare a respray as a modifacation on your insurance?
