Just wandering if anyone knows anything about mobile speed cameras? I was driving down the A303 towards andover and at the lay-by there was a white estate with DVLA written on the side with speed check flashing on the back. It also had a wierd camera mounted on the A pillar sticking out. I was driving about 85mph, and was wondering whether anyone can shed any light on if it was definately a speed camera or maybe something else. I know this may sound pretty stupid as it said speed check but i have never seen this before.

nope that wasnt displayed anywhere. thats why i was confused. also i didnt think the DVLA dealt with this kinda thing, i thought that it was just the police. What do you reckon?

i've seen dvla camera vans but they had tax check or something wrote on them checking people tax as they drove by, never speed check... random

Yeah, knowing my luck I'm the first to be caught speeding by the DVLA lol o well i guess ill find out in a couple of weeks

yeah, there's been few of these around plymouth.

they are checking vehicle tax. they are checking you from head-on so i guess they are going by front number plate... when i went past them in my polo, my front number plate was sat on my passenger seat

I hope your right, only thing confusing me is the speed check written on the back of the car. Cheers for the help tho :-D

I've been confused by these before. We get one in Guildford all the time, the first time i saw it i pulled up behind it too se what was going on.

You may have miss read this, so i wouldnt worry too much. And if you cant see any speed camera signs in the road i dont think you can get caught.

not sure if the dvla would be dealing with this sort of thing but could they have been checking the average speed of all the cars that pass down that stretch of road to work out if it would be beneficial to put a fixed speed camera there?

I got told off by a police officer once for parking behind a camera van in my old works van to eat my sandwiches.

i think it was on the Alan Jeffries site, there was a pic of a skyline that parked behind a speed camera van, and opened up the bonnet, fully blocking its view :lol: nothing illegal about that though.... they'd just broke down

If they weren't checking tax they're probably surveying how many people in the UK speed lol.

...they would have been surveying and thanks to you soon the A303 will be littered with speedcameras!!! haha if theres a high enough percentage of speeders they will "investigate the stretch of highway with a view to limit speed or enforce existing restrictions"

I thought they could only place a speed camera on a stretch of road that had a certain amoutn of accidents a year. But if that is the case, and i dont get a speeding ticket ill be more than chuffed lol obviously i have learnt my lesson and now drive at a very sensible speed
