mine stick out a mill or so at the bottom, for some reason i have HACKED teh plastci up and its now not touching i think its the atual bolt hole backing thing on the light that is stopping it form going in anymore

Nope, mine are sticking out about a milimetre at the bottom. I've does loads of trimming but nothing makes any difference now.

on both sets I've had theyve been stuck out a little regardless of much butchering!

all i can suggest is move the boot out abit, the catch thing. and hope its not too far that it leaks or is too far out at teh top

I'm sure I read somewhere once apon a time that you have to drill out one of the three holes that they secure through, and then use a washer on the inside to tighten them up against. I've not done any trimming - mine stick out about 3-5mm, but I'm the only one who's notices it and I CBA to butcher stuff.

never seen a set sit perfect hence the reason i got rid of mine!

I've been sanding and drilling for a good hour or so trying to get mine flush, but they stick out maybe 5mm at the bottom edges nearest to the number plate. Can't for the life of me see what is causing the obstruction! Anyone have any ideas?

Not tried it myself but someone told me that if you swap the rubber sealing gaskets from your original 6n lights with the ones on the 6n2 lights you can get them more towards being flush.

The reason being the 6n lights were fitted from the factory and the gasket has been compressed for a good few years so it would be slightly thinner but do the same job.

Try it and report back,

Hi PoloM. I tried removing the rubber seal from the 6n2 lights altogether and it does sit a little more flush, but not 100%! Logic says adding the old seal will push the lights out further.. Something must need sanding / filing down more, but I just can't see what!

This seems like a really popular mod, so is the general consensus that the lights cannot be made flush?

ye u definatly need to drill one hole and use a washer and yes u need to trim soem plastic off i found on the top and all down the side neeeded trimming

You have to use some sort of seal or you'll get water coming in and may damage your c/locking pump amongst other things.

Cheers guys. Think that's answered everything then. Borrowing a file tomorrow (oh the excitement!), so I'll beaver away till I get them looking as good as poss. I wasn't planning on leaving off the rubber, just wanted to test without. Thanks fellas :)

i got rid of the rubbe seal and sealed it up with the stuff u use around the bath!! :-D

back in the day when I had a mk4 I got mine like this:

It involved sanding down the plastic casing (using a dremel, it'd take years by hand!):

and filing out one or two of the holes:

and a lot of trial and error to get right. They were never 100% perfect, it's simply not possible as the mk5 rear end is a different shape. You get to the point where pushing the inner bit of the clusters in makes the outside edge start to stick out.
