Just chating to my dad, and he said it illegal not to have a spare wheel. Is this true?????

i cant see it ebing taht true, as quite alot of people i knwo have tyre weld? and dads never had one on his landy, but if its there it has to be in good nick.

Not true, the new minis have no spare & some mercs aswell. They just have puncture weld in the boot.

You dont have to have a spare wheel, however you are supposed to have provisions for the situaton. ie. tyre weld and a foot pump. Alot of new cars dont come with spares anymore.

i heard from a friend of a sisters cousin kinda thing, that you don't have to have a spare wheel, but if you have one it has to be legal.

If you have a spare wheel it does not need to be legal for the MOT.

i just stuck my spare on the roof rack, although it was bold and flat any way.

got a puncture it a mates car once and stopped, police pulled up and told us it is illegal not to carry a spare, told him he was wrong and that he didnt know what he was talking about, he asked his coleuge and he agreed with me

There's nothing in law says you need to carry a spare or means to fix a puncture.

Common sense maybe, but hey.

A lot of fleet vehicles don't carry either, for health and safety reasons this is to stop untrained employees trying to change them themselves. I used to drive for Tesco and once ended up 3 hours late because I had to wait for a mobile fitter to come out, take the wheel off the van, fit a new tyre on the rim and refit.

the new C4's dont come with a spare either!

they are tested if present when you go for an mot so do need to be legal as my nans car failed cuz her spare was all cracked and perished.

Tyre weld...totally useless if you have a proper blow out/large puncture. I'll always carry a spare.

What Yeti says - it does not matter what state the spare wheel is in,it is just luggage. Anyone failing on the spare is being blagged.

Sorry, but this is wrong on both counts. What max said is right, if a tester notices your spare has something wrong for it, he can issue an advisory, but it is not a test item, nor is the reversing light. I've just confirmed this with an MOT tester (who said "WTF are you asking me for Steve, you know as well as I do they're not"). Yes, if the handbrake has excessive travel such that the Tester believes that there is no 'reserve travel', then a failure will be issued. The spare wheel is not part of the MOT Test. - MOTT

Lights, indicators and hazards

Very obviously, check all the lights and indicators are working and replace any failed bulbs. Make sure the hazards working too. Either use a mirror placed behind the car, or get someone to stand behind the car while you operate the brakes, hazard lights, fog light and indicators. The number plate light is also part of the MOT, although the reversing light is not.

No it must not. Where do you get your information from,Saint Polo? You are wrong. It doesnt matter if the spare is torn to shreds,its still not a failure. How many more times. And how can someone quote someone,then say they're absolutely right,then contradict them? Some people only see what they wanna see.

I agree with Yeti, the tester has never even looked for a spare or looked at the reversing light at any MOT I've ever had done on any car.
