Hello, i am in process of buying a polo off a private seller.

We have been in contact, and i saw something that put me off:

"Obviously with me buying it last weekend, i dont have the log book yet. So if you were to buy the car, i would do a written receipt and give the "new keeers supplement" to you. As soon as the log book comes through to me, i will sign my part and forward it on to you."

I asked "How can i guarantee the cars authenticity if the log book isnt present when i buy the car?"

He replied saying:

"There was a log book present when i bought the car. But when you purchase a car you have to fill it in saying that you are the new keeper, then send it off to the DVLA to have it registered in your name, i only have the little tear off slip from the log book"

"if you were to buy the car i would write out a receipt with all the details of the car i.e. chassis number etc and give you the supplement slip i have. Then as soon as i get the book back from the DVLA, i would sign my part and forward it to you"

Does this sound correct?

Dont buy it til you see the log book. you dont want to hand over the readies and buy something that isnt what you thought!!

This post is old, so you may well have already made the decision to buy/not to buy it.

But i think this would be a good little story for everyone of something similar that happened to me:

I bought a car through ebay about 2 years ago. When I bought it the guy said he had the logbook. When I turned up, he didnt. The only part he had was the tearoff slip with his name written over someone elses on the slip.

The person who owned it before him had apparently filled in that part 'by mistake'. My first assumption was that the car was stolen. So I checked HPI. It came up clear. I had already paid a deposit, so I decided to take a chance (it was only £500 anyway). So I paid the rest of the money on collection.

He said he had sent off the logbook and was waiting to get it back, and would fill it in when he received it. Obviously i thought he was lying and, big surprise, it never turned up and he never contacted me.

However, after looking up on the DVLA website, I found out there is a form (cant remember the number) to request a new logbook under YOUR name (new owner) if you have just bought a 2nd hand car, and the previous owner has lost the old logbook. All you need is the previous owners name and address.

So, using the details on the strip he provided me, I sent off and received a fresh logbook 6 weeks later. Was a total hassle, but a huge relief. I dont know if this would work if the other person has genuinely sent off for a new logbook as there would be 2 requests at the DVLA. However, this worked for me. I think in 90% of cases, if they dont have the logbook, its probably dodgy and I would steer clear though.

Just send the new keeper's in with a form V62.

I've done this a few times and never had a problem.
