I've just brought a mk3 polo and i was wondering whats the biggest wheels i could get on it.

I'm not sure weather to go small and wide or big and not so wide lol

any options?

Coupe? Looks wise I've seen a few 16s that work, but 15s is as big as I'd go.

14s best bet IMO

I'm not into spending loads of money on it though.

cheap options are stuff like driver steels off a mk2 golf, 14x6J a size that suits a polo pretty well. cheap alloy wheels are generally wank.

G40 BBS (13x5.5J) are common as hell now because people want bigger/wider wheels. sets go for £75 up and look reeet good.

I bought some 6 spoke Fox Racing 15" wheels for my MK3 GT coupe.

Mines lowered about 60mm, so there too big for my car cos the tyres are 195/45/15.

I've also just bought a set of 14" Pirelli 'P' slots, and I'm in the process of gettin a set of wide 13" steel wheels off a BMW E30.

I was in the same boat as you mate, so i bought all 3 different sizes and thought id do it by trial and error! lol.

The MK3 looks wicked if its slammed with either a set of 13" ATS cups or classics!

Those wheels are a bit pricey for me, thats why I've gone for the cheaper wide steel option!

Hi there, this is a mk2 however, the arched are pretty much the same underneath.

These are 15 inch. I had to do majour rolling to get them under. So honestly I wouldn't go bigger. In fact next year I am going 14 inch minilites.

I got a set of these for £20.

Perfect size for a mk3 as well

I think 13's are too small for 60/40 slam. Not arch gap, the more the distance from the exhaust to the ground.

Iv been on 13's and 60/60 down for about a year now and I'm fully pissed off with the exhaust always blowing because its getting battered on the speed bumps.

14" wheels, with a decent width and 50 tyre height - 60/60 down - perfect arch gap and extra clearence.

I can fully assure you mate (mk2 rowdy) if you go too low you will regret it. I liked it at first but I'm sick of it now, its just not practical or good for the car AND say goodbye to any handling at 80mm!!! The cars geomety totally fucked.

And before anyone says

"I'm 80mm down on 13's and i can get around just fine" Bullshit, I'm only 60mm down and the zorst scrapes badly even on small speed bumps.

I think you are right about the geometry part, however the lower the center of gravity the better it will handle, assuming you set the cars geomatry to compensate(IF THAT IS POSSIBLE, on the polo it isnt!). My car is running a 60mm drop, however it is on 15's at the moment so I don't hit any speed bumps. Atmitadly I have to crawl over them. I found fitting gladerseit blocks made a huge diferance, although I did have the car tracked afterwards as well. I think it really depends on how much money you have to throw at setting the suspension up. Personly I think on a mk2/3 polo 60 mm is the limit anything lower is asking for major repair bills. At 60mm my lower strut brace scrapes sometimes, so na I don't think 80mm is a wise move either, unless of corse the car is going to become a trailer whore. hehehe

i had my GT lowered 80mm all round on 13" Gt steels and the only thing i caught was the side exit exhaust. that was only because it was stupidly low!!!!!! never did the sump tho.

Just out of curiosity what lower brace do you have? I have an ally one the sits between the TCA's it hangs quite low. Is the another design? I hit a wood pigeon the other day doing almost a buck 10. I never knew a bird had that many feathers! My car look like someone had had burst a feather pilow under it! hehehehe

I can't understand how it's "bullshit" My mk 3 is my daily, it's lowered 80mm on a philj kit and ats classics. And again as is mentioned above, the only thing i've ever scraped is my side exit.

Also like to add, i live is Glasgow and out speed bumps/road conditions are ten times worse than that of the most places down south.

13's seem to be a little better catered for than 14's in general with a better range of tyres over a large selection of width and profiles.

I'm all for 14's on a Mk3 Polo with 195/45's or 185/50's. Lower the car 60/40 with an H&R Cup Kit and you'll have a good looking car, with good ground clearance, nice arch gap, no rubbing, scrubbing or horrible crashing noises and it should handle well. You'll be able to carry passengers and if it's your bag you'll be able to tackle some nice undulating roads without fear of ripping your cat brace off. Added bonus you can fit 256mm brakes and your Polo will then actually stop well.

175/50 on a 13"x7J wheel lowered 60/40 looks the dogs danglies, but not really practical at all...heard too many bits of car making contact with the ground for me to ever consider it.

Are you sure you don't just need to sort out your exhaust? I had problems with my cup car kit in that it was to low and harsh that the exhaust just kept getting shaken off. Next cat back exhaust, new clamps and hangers and it never fell off once. Sat really nice and tight up against the chassis as well. I had about 3 exhaust on the car and the only one that worked out well for me was a stock VAG system.

If your exhaust is scraping badly at 60mm on small speed bumps then there is definitely something wrong with your car.
