Featured Replies

fitted a brand new exhaust today(std) and then i steam cleaned my engine bay(out edges/struts) and for some reason the car is holding back under exceleration. At one point it nearly stopped all together with my foot to the floor.

I dont get it though as its been running sweet as a nut up to now, only 59k on the clock.

car has a new dizzy on it. this looks like its been fitted for a while tho..

i also steam cleaned the arches, could i have got water into the fuel tank?

? sorry just been a long day!!

Air flow metre would cause the car to start but not rev if its buggered

A 1043cc SPi lump doesn't have an AFM (air flow meter).

My bet is that you've got some moisture in the ignition components, more than likely the coil and inside the dizzy body.

Give them a good spray with WD40 or similar, and take off the dizzy cap to make sure its dry inside. Also, take off each of the HT leads one at a time and ensure they're dry, along with their connections to the plugs.

You won't have got water in the fuel tank - thats at the back of the car under the rear seats.

Check the wiring looms connections to the coil and the dizzy as well - if you've got the time just remove every single electrical connector you can see in the engine bay (one at a time!) and give them a quick squirt with water dispersant, that should sort it.

ok thanks for the replys!!

I've just took the dizzy cap off and cleaned the conector checked all the ht leads and they seem fine, bit dark outside to check the wireing.

I think i may of put the ht leads in the wrong order as now it wont start and it backfired?? i need the car for work in the morning! so I'm gna sit here all night and hope for a solution

sorry guys!! :crybaby:

How am i going to get the leads in the right order now? i rushed into it and took every lead off not thinking...(I'm impatiant!!!)

Erm, well that was a bit daft wasn't it!

The only way for you to do it if you don't know how to find TDC (which I guess you won't) is to put the HT leads on in this order on the distributor cap in an ANTICLOCKWISE direction:

1 - 3 - 4 - 2

Number 1 is the timing belt end, and number 4 is the distributor end, I'm obviously referring to the spark plugs.

So connect number 1 spark plug HT lead (which will be furthest from the dizzy) to any output on the dizzy cap, then move anticlockwise to the next one and connect number 3, then number 4, then number 2. The lead from the coil will stay in the middle (this is called the king lead).

Try to start it - if it doesn't start then move every single HT lead round anticlockwise by one output. Try to start it again. You'll know if it will start almost straight away so you don't need to crank it for long.

Keep doing this until it starts - you'll only need to do it a maximum of three times before you get them in the right order. Then don't take them off again!

your a star mate, i owe you a beer!!!! :)

you sure its anticlockwise? I'm going round in circles!! literally!

I'm positive. Firing order is 1 - 3 - 4 - 2. Rotor arm rotates anticlockwise.

Big sorry agian, you are indeed THE man, i now owe you two pints!!!

can i just confirm that it will only start if you get the right order on the distributor cap?i got mine to start but because I'm nervous about maybe doing it wrong i didnt wanna leave the engine running for ages!although it sounded fine.
