Well thats the b16 build finished and tonight I just reached 1000 miles on the new engine so I'm quite the happy chappy.

The reason I decided to rebuild the b16 was I didnt know the history or the mileage of the engine and the only thing I knew about it was it came from a rolled car so there was the possibility of oil starvation. The aim of the rebuild was to have a decent base for the turbo build I plan on getting round to so a few uprated parts were thrown in along the way.

Heres the engine as I bought it:

Got a wee bit of stripping done:

The engine was a bit past its best:

At this point I sent away the engine and head to get some work done so I decided to find out what kind of diff I had and what state the gearbox was in.

I was told the box had a recent rebuild and that was confirmed by the condition of all the synchros and a mark on the inside of the casing by the company that carried it out. The LSD was rumored to be a cusco but turned out just to be a standard itemwhich isn't a bad thing.

The head was ported polished, degreased, and skimmed. The cam cover and valves were bead blasted to remove all the crap. The block was cleaned and degreased and the bores were honed.

Started on the cam cover using VHT wrinkle paint:

All my goodies arrived and It brought a big uplift to the whole thing!:

I soon realised there were a few problems with the bits. The exhaust was 6 inches too short. My friend had told me he bought a de-cat that was about 6 inches to long for his exhaust so I bought that thinking what a smart cookie I was until I found out my cat was the same size as the de-cat so I still had a 6 inch gap! The big end bearings were completely the wrong size so I contacted the seller who then had to order new ones from Australia! Awesome. Then I noticed the clutch was wrong so I had to wait on another coming from the US. More awesome.

I decided to get on with the build and get everything together:

I decided the inlet manifold needed a wee clean up so I stripped it, took it to work, and sandblasted it. During that I noticed one of the injectors were different to the rest. So to be on the safe side I used the ones from the D15B7:

Found out I dind't get a full conversion. I had to buy a gear linkage, PAS pump, and front engine mounts from an integra. That cost me even more time. Full thing took 3 months and about half of that was waiting on parts.

Still need to get a front g/box mount and a couple of pins for the ECU connectors to wire up the vtec. I've finished running it in now and I'm desperate to get the vtec wired up so if anyone has any spare ECU connector pins get in touch!

Got some crappy pics of it finished but I'll get some better ones soon.

A guy on a honda forum is sending me some ECU pins! 'tec time is on the way!

Thanks for the comments folks.

My old polo is up for sale again. Desperate to buy it back but I dont have a spare £500. :(

Reckon the owner would be interested in a p/x for a Saxo VTR?

What power is this engine supposed to be with vtec working? 160 bhp?

I do and I want it!! Contact details?

Nice conversion by the way, nice to see its coming on well :)

Good read, look forward to seeing more progress in the future :)

I think if i were going to add forced induction to a V-Tec it'd be a supercharger, get more low-down torque before the V-Tec gets going at the high revs..

It supposed to be 160bhp with the vtec soI'll be hoping for 170 with the de-cat, induction and head work.

I've contacted my friend who knows the guy that owns the polo. I'll pass on the detail through PMs to whoevers interested and you can get in touch with him yourselves.

Smithy - Superchargers are super expensive and it doesn't leave me many options if I want to upgrade for higher boost in the future.

pure sex as ever scott can't wait to c it rolling

Good point.... 170bhp cant be shy anyway!

i want some vtec goodness

vteckick0zu.jpg

i also want some vtec action.........

i recon the japscene will be full of old dubbers soon, like a right of passage

looking good scott

TBH I preffer the dub scene. The scene tax on hondas is rediculous and its almost frowned upon to do things yourself or not use top brand stuff.

The engine looks beautiful.

Your civic looks sweet dude!

How come you are using the old manifold?

looks good man! where'd you are headers go?

or did you mention that already

Basicaly the exhaust manifold was off another model of civic that I thought I could make fit. Turns out I couldn't. :?

Pity because it looked fookin awesome!
