Right I'm looking at getting some coilovers come renewal time for my 6n 16v and as Venom is just down the road from me I'm probs gona get them from there.

basicly i want some serious drop but donw want it to be rock hard.as i'l be driving to work each day.

I've been recommended the AP coilovers £325 (25% dampening)

but i cant really see the difference between these and the following apart from the obvious 5% difference.

Venom coilovers £280 (30% dampening)

JOM coilovers £280 (30% dampening)

just wanted some advice as i have no idea really, dont want to go for the PhilJ's as they'r really stiff.

To be honest if you want a 'serious drop' your gonna need some hard suspension unless you want your wheels to say hello to mr arch. If you have it really low its gonna be hard anyway cause the springs will be more compressed. The more compressed they are the less comfort they offer.

So would you say the 30% dampening ones are more likely to be appropriate as they will be stiffer for the bigger drop but also decent enough for daily use?

i'l be running some 195/45/15's (on 7" wide alloys) so will be wanting it pretty low but obviously dont want to be getting very friendly with mr arch

as you said about the more compressed they are the less comfort if i was to start with a softer setting ie 25% then when it is very low it should still be stiff enough but not extremely stiff for the daily drive.

Right, from my point of view, baring in mind this is not a technical fact but my opinion...

Once you start driving a car thats been lowered loads on coilovers and sat on stretched low profile tyres ride quality pretty much goes out of the window. Unless you are wanting to build some fancy suspension which will cost you a fortune.

I'd say if your worried about ride comfort a lot either go for some good quality coilovers (I've heard good things about those AP Racing ones, even though there not that expensive) and don't wind them right down. Make for a sensible ride height. After all your suspension and tyres are going to soak up a big chunk of the bumps and stones in the road. If you replace nice soft suspension and huge cushion like tyres with elastic bands and hard springs the ride is really going to suffer.

Personally I got used to a hard ride really quickly, now it doesn't really bother me at all. Feels weird when I'm in a car with stock suspension, kind of feels like its hovering or something.

Maybe worth finding people in Preston with coilovers on there car and low profile tyres to see if they will take you out so you can see what you make of it.

After all peoples comfort levels are different. I think my Lupo is comfortable but my dad has nout but bad words to say about the ride.

I want my ride to be like what it is in Paul's ibiza, but ye i'll see how yours is. hopefully it aint too bad lol. i PM'd PhilJ last night asking him what the dampening was on the TA's n he said they'r 30% but thats what its ment to be in Paul's aswell

If you lower a car on coilovers then the springs shouldn't be any more compressed with the coilovers at max height compared to min height as you're just adjusting the platform not compressing the spring. You'll just have less damper travel available. A mate had a set of Spax coilovers on his mk2 Golf and had them set pretty hard and they were still remarkably comfortable.

so the dampening is important.

out of the 4 sets mentioned in the 1st post would people recommend?

Dont know of anyone with AP Coilovers... I'm tempted by them too but have had no feedback from any owners...

by in large you always get what you pay for, from what I've heard u may aswell just weld your swing arms in place if your gonna buy cheap coilies... great for cheap slammage but a heavy price to pay for the looks.

The principle is simple really, with less travel in the suspension available (less room between wheel and arch) its gonna have to diffuse those bumps in a much shorter distance and hence be stiffer.

My mate put fk highsports on his stock polo, and it doesnt seem bumpy, but it stiffens up on corners, but he is running ballon tyres, dont know if this piece of info is any use

t1g3r14- I know that BeckyB is saving for some of the AP's as her other half Rob had some on his vento (he is on this forum just not sure what his username is) and they definatly recommend them , when i went to Venom they told me they were made in the same factory as another much more expensive make, weitec or someone like them

I've had fk highsports on for two years and it is a firm ride but it's not uncomfortable! that's with none balloon tyres...

My highsports look pretty fucked when I took them off. Well not proper fucked as in un-useable but needed a good service and some new locking rings cause all mine had gone brittle and just shattered.

iv also seen some coilover protector things, basicly it looks like a velcro bag which just goes over the coils well the whole thing really and its ment to protect them from all the shite off the road etc, this it was £30 for all corners, looked a good idea.

Does anyone know anyone who has or is running the above coilovers?

thats what i thought with them being from the same factory etc, if this is the case I'm guessin its pretty good for £325?

i just want a kit thats 40 / 60 mm drop and good quality (fit and forget) ??? does that exist and if not why not...

old springs and shocks on my mk2 square had been on there for 30 years !!! yeh they werent great for handling id imagine... but hadnt burst a seal or corroded to the point of being dangerous... they just did there job

Thats what i heard too... doubt they're the exact same though, I'm sure theres some small detail that has been refined on the weitech's... theres like a 200 pound price difference!!

KW V2's or Bilstein B16's for the win.. lol you'd be looking to pay a grand for either set but from my personal experience i'd say they are far superior in comparison to anything else available, Fk konig's are pretty damn nice too.... :-D I still wouldnt buy em though, not for a polo anyway (no offence to all the polo lads n gals)...

The weitech dampening adjustable ones look pretty damn good but they're about 300 quid more! You gets what you pay for at the end of the day and seeing that its your daily driver and you commute with it, id personally save up and buy something with adjustable dampening so you can set it all up according to your tastes. Me personally, well my cars a driveway ornamant, not because its a show car or anything but i just dont need it to be honest, so I'm buying Hottuning ebay coilies!! lol

Do they last less time, worse ride, need adjusting more often or what? I'm not looking to produce a show winning car, I just want a bit of slammage without slamming my wallet . But if I have to pay for quality, then I'm probably willing to wait, saving.
