I'm posting on behalf of my girlfriend. She has a 1.4 tdi version if thats any relevence to it but the battery keeps dying if we leave i over night. its got an alarm which we think is standad but its dosent look like?? did the 6N2's come with central locking alarms? this one has a little red light that keeps flashing??? has anyone ele has this problem or any other battery problem with their 6N2 ??

Any ideas on why or what i could check??

The alternator has been tested its fine the battery has been tested its fine ..????

i have a central locking kit as std on my car and it has a flashing light... no problems atall. soemthing to do with it not holding chage, doe sit charge up ok? asin when its in the car? or if you jump it drive for abit then turn off an start it it coems on or does it stay dead?

ye i will charge it for like 12 hours put it on and it will last 2days ! then leave it for like 6 hours then it will die again

id check the altenator/get it checked then mate... maybe its not charging the bettery and its loosing charge. or geta new battery. but i would get teh battery tested at halfods they did mine for free.

Halfords testing is good but not advanced enough...

Anyhow if the battery is not holding its charge..

It could be a number of things... a power drain caused by something miswired or a short wire itself..

So to rule that one out if you can borrow a battery from another car or something and see if it dies in yours..

Get your multimeter out and check the Alty is charging etc. too

Does the alarm have a master key to isolate it in the off position? If it does i would try that to see if thats what draining the battery. Sounds like somethings draining. As someone else pointed out,its possible to connect a multimeter to measure how much current is draining with the ignition off. Its then a process of elimination.

not that i know much about the technical stuff - ( I'm tony100's girlfriend by the way)

but we've had a tester thing on the alternator and the battery (which is 6 months old) and they were fine. we have put another battery on my car recently just to check and it drained that daily aswell.

is there a way to tell if there is a mis-wire or short wire??

its a big pain as theres not always another car around for me to jump it off, and having to jump it everyday is a pain in itself !!! i would like it sorted as quick as possible as I'm going to need it in a week to drive to swansea for my exams and i need to be able to rely on my car to get me there and not be dead on my drive

Its hard to diagnose a battery drain sitting here but a good place to start would be with any after market components that you added.. and to do this you need this:

If you suspect an amp or car stereo wiring then you can place the wiring into the clamp and see how much it is draining when the ignition is switched off. If there is power where there should not be then you know which wires to investigate... or too much power where there should be little power.. Similarly it might be worth putting a few wires from the alarm into the clamp... or turning the alarm off and seeing how the battert survives.. Now.. I'm no expert so I cant tell you how much an alarm should be draining when the car is off but if its too much then you know... but if it is an after market alarm then it could be just that... before I attempt this I would make sure I have any codes etc. for recoding.. last thing you want is the car shutting down on you because the alarm is off... or your alarm not working when you switch it back on.. its a mission trying to find these things...

Are there any fuses that keep blowing?

Finally, its not impossible but once in a while the starter motor contacts become worn or left in a certain position that creates a short... I had this problem with a Corsa once... moved it a few meters and it died on me... when I tried to restart it... refused to. Hows it starting up? Is the starter motor taking a lot of turns before things fire up? May be worth checking the starter motor brushes too in case.

Very finally.. damn I need to stop typing.. check wiring.. once in a Skyline I had a battery drain.. it turned out to be touching brake wires but the wires were running in a difficult postion so I had to remove a lot of bits to investigate..

R.I.M3 is right it can be painful process of elimination.

Are the batteries sealed or is it possible to top up the water level in them?

If it had only happened in the new battery then id say you had a dead cell, but 2 batteries doing the same would show a short or the batteries arnt powerfull enough.

I had a wire on the Fan controller touching the fan casing but it wasnt enough to blow the fuse but still enough current to drain the battery in 20mins, so came back to a car that was absolutly dead, but after checking over everything (id know the resistor was on the way out)i unplugged the fan and the car slowly came back to life.
