I hope this is the right section for this. Basically I only have one key for my car which obviously means if i lose it I've got a problem. I was wondering how I would go about getting another one cut? I'm guessing its not as easy as just taking it to a key cutter place and getting them to do it?

You can go to VW to get a key cut and coded - expensive.

Get a key cut by a locksmith and coded by VW - not so expensive.

Get a key cut and cloned at a locksmith - Prob the cheapest. ( not sure if they clone them in the UK tho?)

We have had a few issues with non genuine keys but on the whole they are as good as the VW ones.

need to do this for a mk3 surely you can just get one cut?

I got one cut for a fiver! at a shoe repair place...

mk3 don't have an immobiliser chip built into the key that has to be coded to the ECU though!

Thats right some of the early ones didnt have an immobiliser. A locksmith will have a reader that would say if its an immobilser key with a chip.

Yeah but mk3 keys were mentioned here in the thread as well.

Wouldnt just save the hassle and go to VW do it without hassle

if its a mk3 should be fine just getting it cut, if its a mk4 chances are it has a chip in it. Either way any decent key cutting place will be able to copy the chip- ask them before you get it cut... they have keys with red blocks in them, these contain a chip which they can imprint your chip onto (we have the technology!)

iv got a 6n cl, key has a chip in it, and iv had 2 keys cut at different places and they were able to copy the chips fine.

after i pay 100 from vw

dont try save money and buy one off ebay and try get it coded at vw because it wont work and they still charge you the coding cost of £50
