Has anyone noticed how many quick-ish 90s hatches and saloons are being sold for peanuts right now? I'm guessing it's due to the "fuel crisis" or whatever, or maybe people don't want 10+ year old cars full stop.

Anyway, I fancy a change, so have been looking in local papers for things up to a grand. So far the things that have popped out for my budget are:

Cavvy GSI (redtop bruv!)

Mk2 Astra GTE

205 GTI

Saab 9000 Aero

Passat GT 16v (B3)

Passat 1.8T (B5, not exactly quick but just food for thought)

Vectra V6

Punto GT Turbo

All of these have been £1000 or under, not particularly high mileage or bad condition. All with tax and mot.

205 1.9 GTI all the way!! Its french shit but I just love them!!

Mk2 Astra GTE

without a doubt that would be my choice out of that list, i'd probably go for the 8v myself. always loved the look of them and the go well too, as standard the coolest looking cars on that list by far. just be careful tho as most will of been nailed.

although the 205 GTI is probably a much better car (performance wise any way), and you couldn't go far wrong with a good one tbh.

Well that list is in the order of how much I want each car.

Cavalier is growing on me, just a shame they have such a chav following.

The Golf will probably stay actually and end up getting a transplant anyway but I want something I can buy cheap, MOT it then chop the springs and drive around not giving a shit for a year Just want to give another car a go.

then in all seriousness it has to be a 205 gti either a 1.6 or 1.9 both are brilliant cars with the first being more insurance freindly, the cavvy tho tarnished by a bad rep are good but ugly imo and not nearly as good as the 205gti.

watch out for popping out of 5th gear and seized rear beams on 205gti and do a timing belt change if it hasn't had on in the last 30,000 miles on high mileage ones oh and dont be put off by 205's rep off having soft engines boxes i gave all mine death mostly without letting them warm up and never had a serious problem with them

ih and wen your bored of the 205 it'll make a great track toy
