What does this button do on the gearstick!

Featured Replies

I've got a Mk4 Polo GLX and about half way down the gearstick on the left hand side there is a small button. The button cant be seen but you can feel it underneath the gearstick cover. When you press it and the engine is running. the yellow immobiliser light on the dash lights up for about 5 secs.

What does it do?? I'm just curious really. I'm hoping its a boost button lol but highly doubt it!!

naa buddy its an electrical button. Sorta button you would find to eject the DVD drive on the computer (if that makes any sense) basically its not a mechanical button...

I imagine it only comes on polos with central locking?? dunno

I thought that until 2day I started pissing around with it some more! I had the key in the ignition to the 1st point and held the button down and summat strange happened. The red light on the dash lit up and the indicators flashed twice (as if the car had just been unlocked)

Just to let people know the lights are under the air vents in the centre console. Just above the ash tray. There is a yello and a red light.

aint gotta clue what this button is for but its sure confusin the shit outta me!

What ever it is I dont think its factory, sounds like some after market alarm / immobiliser to me.

Is it not something to do with starting the car when at lights? In germany you have to switch engine off when waiting at red light. I'm sure its something to do with that.

dont know what it is but hook it up to some NOS :)

ejector seat

its a crule joke that the people at vw put in just to irritate whoever bought it.

VW use the tester to check the immobiliser it wont be that. Is your car a 6N? as I dont think the UK cars came with a factory fit alarm which points to an after market system.

Guess that sort of expalins it then! Even though I cant understand why a lady in her 70's would be interested in installin an aftermakrket system?? (previous owner) but yeah its a 6n and it does have an alarm, immobiliser and remote central locking.
