1.1 swap

Featured Replies

Iv found a GT engine and have been offered a set of bike carbs by a friend. does anyone know how hard it would be to run a mk3 gt lump on 4 bike carbs? would it be easier to convert a mk2 gt engine?

or on the other hand would it be easier to do a straight forward gt swap and try get it wired into a 84 mk2?

HELP!!! :?

if i was doing it, i wouldn't go down the bike carb route

get some more bits from a mk3 GT and use the multipoint fuel injection

you'd need.......

in-tank lift pump (from any mk3 Polo)

fuel line's (from any mk3 Polo)

anti-roll bar from a 5 speed car

main fuel pump (must be from a mk3 GT)

bracket, filter & accumulator tank that the main fuel pump sit's on (from any mk3 Polo)

engine bay loom & ECU (must be from a mk3 GT)

GT exhaust (your current exhaust will strangle a GT motor)

de-catted downpipe

you'd need to wire the main fuel pump seperately

i may have missed a couple of thing's, cos i haven't done this to a mk2 Polo myself.......but my brothers done a multipoint conversion to his mk1 Golf

..........

you should be able to search the forum for more info......or find someone on here that's got a GT motor'ed mk2 that can help you

Paul :D:thumbsup:

also.....the above sound's like hard work

but, the main plus point is you'd get between 350 to 400 mile to a tank of juice on a long run if you take it easy

i don't think you'd get that with bike carbs

It would be easier to run the car on bike carbs dues to the fact you wont have to mess around with any of the injection wireing

You would just need to get an inlet manifold made for them, feed the carbs of a cheapo electric fuel pump or maybe even the mechanical pump, use a swirl pot to regulate the fuel pressure and install choke cable and throttle cable, and enjoy basicly

LregG has a GT lump and bike carbs and gets over 35mpg damn good i think. Thats what i get at the moment although my o2 sensor is fked.

If i was going to do the GT conversion i wouldnt use the 1.3 bottom end, use the ABD 1.4 more torque!

Use the abd bottom end for more torque, with a GT head and cam. I personally would advise getting it in and running witht he GT injection setup. IT isnt that hard, there isnt a silly amount of work it just requires plenty of man-hours. I did it in 2.5 days with one mate and we drove it home. The fuel lines are easy once you work out what goes where, Mounting the fuel pump bracket can be a pain but we cable tied ours up just so we could drive it, a more permanent solution is on its way i believe.

The loom is a straight swap, but the in-tank fuel pump requires some soldering to the existing mk2 interior loom. Hypojam is wrong - there is no messing around with injection wiring, its a straight swap and a quick bit of soldering. Max Crox's thread provides more detail if you are interested. Worry about bike carbs later - get it in, and running for now, as there are less potential reasons for it to not work. Once you are happy with the GT setup, then look at whacking the carbs on.

Trust me - if you take on too much at the start it will take you forever to finish!

It does sound a lot, admittedly, but it really isnt that difficult at all its just the time needed to do it that can be an issue. If i did it again i reckon i would have it in and running within 2 days maximum.

cheers lads for the replys. this will really help sway it, i think that skatty 01 has a good point, if i can get a full get swap in and running i can think about the carbs later.

thanks for the list paul, i had missed a few bits off mine :?

i appreciate all the feedback lads, i dare say there will be some more posts on this, soon.

what were the mk2 gt engines running on??

Mk2 "GTs" don't exist in this country, they are just boggo 55 bhp Coupe S'. Pierburg carb. Even in Germany, they could be a 1.0 because it was only a trim level! But the proper LHD only 75 bhp GK powerplant had a lumpy cam and sky high compression (for it's day) to give it powwer.
