I'm training to become a driving instructor and i need to know what car to use to teach in?

Things to consider:

Manoeuvreing

Visability

Fuel Economy

Looks!

and i've got to drive it everday so it can't be boring!!

what car did you learn in, what did you like or hate about it?

and what made you choose your instructor?

i had my lessons in a diesel fiesta. was a nice little car to drive...

it depends what kind of an audience you want, theres afew driving instructors near me that aim at young drivers, so they have quite flash looking cars that would appeal to young people. theres a swift thats got stickers and decals all over it to make it look like a track car.

and theres also a black/green mg zr with decals all over it New minis also seem to be quite popular

I learnt in a diesel mini which was a nice car to drive.

It also had a cat in the hat sticker on the roof which made it extra cool

cat in a hat? is that why you chose that instructor?

I'd be aiming at young driver's because i'm only 23 myself, and although i'm female i don't want any 'girly driving school' stuff. I want to appeal to male and female pupils.

I learnt to drive in a Dawoo Matiz .. WOuld never advise that to somebody .

I also learnt to drive in abrand new diesel corsa . Was real easy to drive although the shape of it made it difficult for doing some manouvers and there was a buzzer when you put your handbrake on and wernt at a complete standstill.

I am sure majority of Learner drivers get there cars through a business they work for ?

If you work for a big company like BSM or AA then yes they give you a car. But i'm going totally independant so i could get a brand new one on finance or buy a used car and have the dual controls fitted...

i learnt in a pug 206 and found it to be an easy car to drive. avoid saxo as the pedals are too close together for people with feet anything larger than pixie feet. clios are ok but the rear visibility is poor. I've not really driven many modern cars other than that. i have to say the easiest car I've found to drive is a polo squareback as it has superb visiblity, bit too old to use as a learner car though. I taught my girlfriend to drive in a coupe s and have to say its one of the scariest experiences ever! was tempted to wear a crash helmet!

i learnt how to drive in a bran new fiesta 1.4 turbo diesil and it was great appart from the pillars are huge and get in the way abit. make sure you dont be one of those driving instructors who doesnt want to use petrol. i have a couple of mates who are learning to drive and one got cheap lessons and hes never been off the industrial estate and spent an hour practicing left hand turns and the other was out on the road within 10 mins. i know which i would want.

ha, yeah i taught demolover in his Coupe S and my Mk4. I'd say the Coupe S is defo for a more experinced driver! the mk4 was good but maybe a bit too old now for instructing.

Looks like Dielsel is the way forward. Has anyone driven a blue motion polo??

No one can get good experience in an industrial estate!

How about something like an Aygo, dirt cheap to run and all that.

i learnt to drive in a polo 6n2, was a class little car, except like most new cars a-pillers are stupidly big and feel like a massive blind spot.

but everything in the car as standard feels spot on, it feels composed and inspires confidence without being too lairy/heavy or whatever.

my friend has a blue motion polo and its a good car, 3 cylinder TD and it actually had a decent amount of poke, id be too worried about the learner nooblets crashing it tho!

Are guys happy to drive Aygo's? The fiat 500 and kind of interesting but i thought it would put male learners off??

I'm trying to think outside the Volkswagen box for once in my life but a Polo does seem like a good choice

hey jenny i never heard any talk of being a driving instructor!

diesel ftw!

fiat 500 or panda, citroen c2 and renault twingo are my current fav tiny hatchbacks!

The problem with a diesel is you never learn to feel a clutch properly, because the torque of the engine lets you get away with doing stuff that would stall a petrol.

I learnt to drive in one of these:

Pros: Great visibility, tight turning circle, easy to manoveur.

Cons: Overtaking is difficult, instructor has to stand on the 3 point hitch.

The second time i had to learn to drive I learnt or relearnt shall I say in a Suzuki Swift. Dunno any details engine size etc just know it was a 5 door petrol. Visabilty was excellent, seemed suitable for most drivers (I'm 6'1 instructor was like 3ft both drove it fine). Nippy little thing too and good for low speed town driving. I really liked driving it TBH :)

dont get an aygo there shit I've only driven it 2x out of pure despiration... anyway...

get a diseal as there harder to stall and cheaper to run

I learnt in a corsa but id say that or a fiesta are deffo the 2 best cars

I would buy it on a monthly scheme and then just hand the keys back after a year and get a new one and do the same thing so you arnt losing cash.

My instructor had a diesel swift and it was a great car to learn in, so easy to drive

I learnt in an old school nissan micra. was a good little car

I learnt in a new diesel fiesta and really enjoyed it. Quite a few instructors seem to be using them now. :grin: x

i learnt in a bmw 316i compact

was an ace car!

I learnt in a 1.9 TDI Corsa Sport.

It is perhaps the easiest car I've driven and certainly one of the best, better than any modern VW I've ever been in or driven.

It looked good and flash. It was powerful. It was comfortable. It was easy to drive. It was easy for all the manueveurs. It was difficult to stall. It was fun to drive and most importantly it appealed to both guys and gals and is a car that a lot of younger drivers desire.

All in all it was a car I could have seen myself owning if I could have afforded it.

i learnt in a petrol corsa , was good car easy to manoeuver , nippy , good visability but think that cause it was a 5 door !

i liked my instructor cause he was young and used to have a little white board which he would do drawings on and a folder of diagrams for different round abouts on the test routes. he also wanted you to pass and wasnt trying to scam you out of money by not letting you move on .

my mate learnt in a civic type s , and a few others in fiesta think it was a diesel and my girlfriend learnt in a 207 diesel .

why dont u take a few lessons with instructors in your area and see what you like and dislike ??
