My parents were EXTREMELY opposed to me spraying my car green 'it looks nice red', I bought the paint regardless without telling them, and my dad wakes up in the afternoon (he works nights) to find me halfway through primering the car with a few of my mates.

He went apeshit.

Then later, when I had finished, Mum came up to it and said it really looked quite good. Dad said nothing. Then I hear from mum that dad had reluctantly admitted that he quite liked it, and that I had done a pretty good job of it for one afternoon :p I say do whatever you want, it's your money after all. Maybe offer them a little bit of cash a month for driveway space when your not there?

There actually comes a time in life where you have to stand up to your parents. Not in a bad way but be confident in what you are doing and why you want to do it and stick to it. If have confidence in what you are doing this will show when you talk to people and they will begin to trust what you are doing.

Normally things boil down to spending too much money on a car. And if you think about it rationally then spending loads of money on modifying cars is not the sensible thing to be doing. You rarely get you money back, the money could probably be used better else were and the older you get the more and more you realise this. (Not that it stops you doing it its just when you have to pay for things it hurts more!!! :) )

My father really didn't understand why I was spending money on my track day car until he actually went to a track day with one of his cars and then he understood and approved. I had a goal to make a cheap track day car as I didn't want to start spending money on my BM as that would have run into 1000's and with the polo if something breaks its cheap to fix. If it does break I have my other car to use to get to work and as the Polo is so simple I can do (and have done) pretty much all the work myself.

Its really because they don't understand why and anyone can relate to that. If you don't understand you think why the heck is he/she doing that... what a waste of money.

But you must also remember times when they kept telling you that you should do something and you not wanting to and it actually turned they were right. I'm sure that has been the case more often than not.

Parents are there to worry about their kids and to try and do what is best for them and help when they can.

My Mum Knows how much i love my car so she dont mind me spending every pay check on it and everyday working on it shes just happy its keepin me of the streets and its keepin me happy. she says she likes it but i no deep down she wants me to sell it and get a Modern day car which will never happen cos I'm sticking to old skool .

To be honest, I think my parents would be more bothered if I spent a lot of money buying a modern car.

to be fair, spending the odd few hundred here and there wont make any difference to uni debts. they are probably sky high any how, you'll have to make them see that you want your motor cuase its fuckin cool, tell them that your not selling, end of!

The only VW I've owned that both parents tolerated was the Red MK2 Polo.

The campervan doesn't count as it's my Dad's.

Neither of them really liked any of my VW's.

My work place hated all my VW's with a passion. I've been asked frequently to buy a better looking car by clients and managers.

Everyone hated my G40.

Just smile and wave at them any time they see you in it. They'll eventually give up and think you crazy.

When my A-reg square was my daily, my old manager asked me when I was going to sell the old VW and get a new car. I told him "First time it breaks down".

Bearing in mind he was a Renault driver, and used to giving a garage a few hundred quid every couple of months, I think that touched a nerve

when ever I'm messing with the car my mum always asks what I'm doing even though she doesnt understand, so i just explain and she just has a blank look on her face

and my dad seems to enjoy helping out, whenever i ask him to give me a hand fitting something he seems to treat it as if its his own

my mum and step dad are like its not just as easy as lowering a car its setting it all back up, changing wheels changes alot (step dad was a mechanic), so he says it needs alot to set it up.

my dad is fine with it, and he understands, he even gave me the leather for the retrim, and says i can use his workshop for making my boot build and things.

But my bro rolled his car on saturday morning, so my mums now shit scared of me going out, and shes said i cannot do anything else to my car, changing it from standard/what it is now.

Shit one, hope he's ok. My mate drove a Rover 200 in the same colour, it was a 1.4 16v, they may be full of problems but they really are a fun car for a hatchback. I'm considerin buyin a 6N once I pass my test as my Coupe is off the road for rust which I'm gonna have rewelded and the entire car resprayed.... so a nice low MOT passing 6N would be useful lol.

My mum doesnt mind me working on my car. My dad constantly tells me to get a newer car..... but he bought me an angle grinder the other day as he knows just how serious I am about it.... bless. lol

My dad thinks its odd lowering a car (Mr practical) and my mum thinks the newer the car the better.

I dont live with either of them, i live with my bro who loves his Mk2 Golfs so he always egging me on to mod my car more if anything!
