Fuel Efficiency?

Featured Replies

Just somthing thats bugging me....

Now this might sound silly to most of you but i was driving along the other day and wondered which of the following is best for my fuel....

Scenario A

Driving on a flat road at 40mph in top gear doing low revs with the pedal almost to the floor if not all the way down

Scenario B

Driving on a flat road at 40mph in a low gear doin mid to high range revs with my foot barely on the pedal

What do you think? :?

Cheers 8-)

I always try and keep it at around 2-2.5k. Seems to be good for fuel consumption. I think any lower and you'll be putting strain on the engine as well as not having any power if you need it!

scenario B for sure. scenario a will wreck your engine and use more fuel.

Stick it in 5th with your foot only just on the pedal?

uses less juice therefore more efficient

i always try to change gear between 2-2.5k revs....unless I'm in a rush ;)

its only a 1.4 8v.....my foot hardly on the pedal in 5th, the car judders lol

for the love of god! driving like that is false economy, it will cause the engine to labour, which in turn wears stuff out, therefore costs money to put right, probably more money than you would have saved from dring like it. optimal mpg will be obtained keeping the car between 2 and 3k, not changing speed eratically and not braking hard.

you can also make sure you tyre pressures are correctly set, keep your windows shut and all uneccesary electrics turned off, and make sure the back of your car isnt full of crap if your that bothered about saving fuel

i never let the engine labour

I love the way taxi drivers drive. Never out of fifth. They have special fifth gear powers, they park, turn sharp corners and even vertical hill start in fifth. They bloody love fifth :-)

I was under the impression that between 2-3k was around the revs to keep the car at for a good balance.

I'm not mad on fuel efficiency...this is just one of those questions that was bugging me and needed to know the answer to :-D

The answer is B. There is a reason cars rev to 6000rpm + the whole range is there to be used for different scenarios.

hmmm... i normally roll about everywhere at 1300 ish revs in 5th barley tapping the accelerator? will this be damaging my engine?

1300, that's barely above idle....

...are people not taught to drive properly?

2-3k for me 5k on motorways as i dont have 5th

Wow you must be rinsing some fools off the line  *jokes* Does sounds a little low on the old revs though.

i start at 1k, then i change at 7k 8-)

lmao :)

me to.

got mine to drop well under 20mpg last night lol

well i saw a post on here where people agreed with using 5th and just leaving your foot on the gas slightly at 30mph so i hav ebeen doing that. i will be using in between 2 need 3 k from now on .

thanks

Audi pulls 3rd gear from about 25mph without labouring all the way to 100mph...hits singe figure MPG...niceeeeeee.

yeah around the 2500 to 3000 rpm is good for me, there the torque is.....

even coming up to rounderbouts, let the engine brake you

knocking it outa gear and coasting can use more fuel apparently

thats one i dont understand. i drive to a nearby town often to see mates, and 50% of the journey is uphill (1st half), and then you hit downhill and its possible to roll about 6 miles without knocking it into gear at all. (its up in the mountains of wales)

I've been told coasting in silent sixth will use more fuel but i cannot see how that is possible....?

i would love to see Tav's driving style:)....sounds fantastic lol

I got taught to drive in 5th at 40mph, but I've never had to have the pedal on the floor to keep 40 in 5th. I'm barely touching the pedal. Why would you drive like scenario A? I don't get how it'd be floored. Unless you're on a hilly road, then 4th, or even 3rd is needed.

well....when you use the engine to brake you, theres no fuel being put in the cylinders, or very little at least

you knock it out of gear and coast, the engine uses fuel to idle

simple

I was always told brisk accerleration then keep the car at a steady speed and at revs that just help the engine pull along nicely.

In the valver I like to keep the revs around the 2Krpm mark around the town, which i find is easy done with its gearing and obviously out on the open road it stays in 5th most of the time. But once your up at speed just a light pressure on the throttle keeps it steady. Got 37mpg from it this week, was well impressed :)
