How well will a sub run without an amp? I'm gonna get one off a mate, but cant afford an amp atm. Was wondering just how punchy it will be without? Il just plug it straight into the sub-out on the back of the headunit

If you conect it ot the RCA pre-outs then ill be suprised if it moved i might n you might hear it with your ear right next to it, you could wire it as a speaker on your head unit but you wont hear it much then either but that really depends on what whattage the sub is in thge first place but i dont htink you would here it over road noise when run of the headunit this way either you need a amp really.

Have a look for a seconda hand one on ebay or something

unless you have a high end headunit which lets you bridge the outputs it won't run very well unless you buy a crossover and even then you'll only be able to run 20 watts rms an ampp is needed to do it right

You might even kill the headunit wiring it directly!!! My mate did! Was a laugh when the stereo started smoking 20seconds into the 1st song!

My mate has the same headunit as me, from Maplin, in his Saxo. He's wires up and old boxed 12" 'Tornado' sub from his bedroom and it does move a bit, about as much as a pair of 6x9's would, just without the high frequencies..

I cant see how it will damage the head unit, all its doing is putting a tiny amount of power into the sub..

Get a sub with a built in amp, I got a Fli 12" one for £90 on eGay thats already amped all in the box :)

Ebay do a good 1, 1700w 5 channels, delivered for £35 got one last week awesome.

Ye for now iv got it wired into the front outputs with the bass turned right up But I'm gonna get an amp of some sort this week :)

Hmmm, i've just bought a Sony CDX-GT44IP which has "direct sub input" port(s) on the back and a "sub volume" control in the built-in eq.

Does this mean that i can run a sub reasonably well without an amp? (The ports on the back consist of one red and one white.)

nope that means you have a sub out ready to go to an amp

there are some pioneer headunits that will let you wire a sub directly to it just like a speaker

Is it possible to run amped components through the same amp? Or will the signal to it just be for the sub?

the signal will be either for a sub or speakers will depend where the crossover is set to
