started to strip all the gti stuff after work tuesday and continued after work all week

parts removed so far;

full gti running gear removed and 95% sold; front end/engine/box/full loom/ecu/hubs/axle/abs/power steering/aircon/brake lines/dash/aircon blower/wiper linkage/cable shift box/coilys etc etc + cut off drivers side engine mount

work done so far;

fitted full new non abs brake lines/non aircon blower motor + matrix/half new wiring loom/coil/fabricated and welded custom g40 mount/chassis leg shaped to clear g40 water pump/shorter radiator/cut out front panel/adapted and fitted rod gear shift linkage/adapted stability bar/new axle cleaned and stone chipped/subframe sanded and stone chipped/arb repainted/full bay + front panel cleaned/carbon fibre blank for aircon pipes/custom coily top mounts + few other bits

oh polished and painted one of my wheels i want to use

i can't view the pics :(

sounds like its coming on well tho, is there no way you could find it in your heart to post the pics directly on to here rather than in a slid show? for some reason my pc won't install flash player9 so i can't view it.

so you're removing a reliable modern 120bhp 1.6 16v motor and replacing it with an older less reliable 120bhp 1.3 8v supercharged motor. Nice logic, but good effort never the less, wish you the best of luck with it.

Good on you for the effort with this, but does seem a bit of a waste of time dropping a G40 lump into a lardy ass mk5. Your power to weight ratio will be well down!

unfortunately you are right but so far I've lost;

the power steering - all pipes and pump etc

abs - all sensors and pump/brain

aircon - pump, pipes, rad, blower motor and housing and additional loom

around 4kg of loom

6.5l washer bottle down to 2l

smaller rad

lighter rear beam + front brakes

rear interior has been ditched just running pair of buckets with harnesses

full headlight washer system ditched

airbags removed

fog lights removed

changing gti headlights to standard

with a few more bits to come.

current spec is

rebuilt 1272 bottom end

psd 4 branch

chip - unsure which i'll have to ask g40dave

r1 charger

toothies with custom 60mm charger pulley

fmic

de wedged

enlarged charger inlet

massively polished and ported head with schrik cam - bought off ebay last night from lmr

with more bits to follow

guestimate at 150bhp before i took it apart upgraded charger, pulley, head and cam so not sure what it'll be pushing out???

any ideas????

Is there any reason you've went for a GTI over say a 1.0? I always thought it was just the running gear/brakes ands stuff that was different on the GTIs?

Panda - GTI motors maybe reliable but the gearboxes aren't, lol.

i was thinking about that too heartagram, surly selling a gti and then getting a 1.0 would probily save some cash, and would also save you removing holes in bumpers for washer jets,

I don't really know much about 6N2s. Like the differences between GTI and lower spec ones.

I know with Lupos the GTI has loads of parts that aren't on the normal Lupos. Whole chassis is different really, wider track, alloy body panels, different bumpers, headlights, indicators etc.

i only bought the gti as a run about while i built the 6n 40, after doing some sums it was actually cheaper to put it in the 6n2 gti.

i knew f.all about the gti either and most of the differences i've noticed upon stripping;

climate control

front and rear brakes

rear beam with built in arb

electronic load sensor

headlights

fatter arb

front bumper

interior

clocks

alloys

bigger radiator

e/w - r/c/l - e/m

stubby drivers side mirror

+ more all of the above are specifically gti and most of it has been sold on so i've seen a return of ~£1200

to be honest work wise it would have been alot easier to put it in a 1.0 or similar but then i wouldn't have had the cash back from selling the 'unwanted parts' on.

i know alot of people think i'm a idiot for doing it but i'm not really bothered, we'll see who still hates it when it's finished. should have been done within a couple of weeks but vw are having problems supplying me my g40 internals!

i'll keep updating the pic's til it's finished well at least driving.

G40 internals are all on back order - 7 to 10 days from the Motherland is expected...

Annoying considering the pace this has taken so far - unless anyone know somewhere other than VAG that has a stock of big end shells and piston ring sets for the PY lump?

This is a nice project and a different angle to the norm. Also with using a GTi, the car will look nice and a good chunk of the overall cost will be recovered with the sale of all the bits he isn't using.

Power to weight ratio will just depend on the extent of the weight saving but it should still go very nicely.

Would like to see some strip times and dyno printouts but i am sure they are to come.

really haven't had alot of love for this project, i just like things a little different! you'd see it drive by looking pretty much standard but with a little rip and a chuff so would leave most people wondering what it was.

when it's done if i ever bump into you you're welcome to have a drive in her.

If i am ever down your way i will drop you a PM and you can take me for a spin. I think it will go very nicely. Had the engine been stock with a million miles on the clocks, no further engine tuning made and the shell left as it rolled from the factory i would have thought this may have been a wasted effort.

The fact that the weight will be considerably reduced, the engine fresh and nice, the mods making ample power and the cost kept down with the sale of the parts makes this conversion an almost sensible idea in my eyes.

Many will not understand and say you shouldn't have bothered. Time will tell whether it is worth it or not but i commend the effort either way and if you don't have love for this then don't worry as i do.

Get in finished and on the rollers and work out power to weight and all that jazz. Will be nice to see what figures come out of the work.

It should go pretty well once its been on a diet and got the motor up to a decent spec. But its just what you want really.
