the hated polo gti - g40 conversion

Featured Replies

i just felt about going around if differently but i think thats always my opionion, my mate wanted to roof chop and strip his highline vr and i said he should do it too a crappy cl shell then put a vr lump in it, otherwise why did he buy the highline,

as with urs i just felt you would save money getting a 1 litre shell but as you have said about making money off selling gti parts you probily fall about even either way...

good luck with the project should be awesome when finished.

It should go pretty well once its been on a diet and got the motor up to a decent spec. But its just what you want really.

indeed it is.....

forgot to ask, the brakes were good yea? not damaged in transit i hope!

Aye they were fine. Not properly tested them yet cause I need to bleed them. Bit spongey.

Look nice with the 280mm discs 8-)

^^^ damn that baby is going to do endo's!!! loving the setting on the coilys - all the way down.

i had this conversion on my old mk1 golf gti and while racing a audi s3 we had to stop suddenly and he nearly twatted into the back of me as i out stopped him, he couldn't belive it, i was chuffed tho!!!

put some more pics up later;

dash, loom, pedal box, matrix, non climate controls/centre console, column all back in and we have ignition!! also painted my hubs, carriers and calipers up, rack should be on it's way to me so can get the subframe and front suspension back on.

picked up a b/n set of yokies 175/50/13's yesterday and should finish painting/polishing my rims tomorrow.

Yer not wasting time like

I wanted to do the calipers black but just want the brakes and everything back on the car. May do them some other time if I can be arsed. Although they don't look to bad behind the G60 steels, bit of red just peering through.

What brakes are you going to run on the GTI?

G40 internals are all on back order - 7 to 10 days from the Motherland is expected...

Annoying considering the pace this has taken so far - unless anyone know somewhere other than VAG that has a stock of big end shells and piston ring sets for the PY lump?

Dave

I got my g40 internals from a place in hayes/southall called ring engineering, he can always get hold of them and my engine has done 60k since i rebuilt it, with no problems.

mad, but cool.

Have you strengthened the pedal box? If you haven't I would advise it. My pedal box went and its a mission to replace. If you've got it out of the car anyway might as well put a bit of weld on it. Usually snap around the clutch pedal.

NOOOOOO! i had a look at it while it was out and it seemed good (the 6n one) which i've fitted back in! DOH! would have run a weld round it if i knew that as it was a bit of a mission to fit!

ecp supplied me the wrong rack yesterday now it's a five day wait to get the right 1! damn it!!!

I don't know if the 6N ones are weak or not but I know the 6N2 ones are. They are the same as Lupo ones. I've not heard of anyone snapping a 6N one so you might get away with it.

how come you didn't just 'charge the 1.6 lump?

Good work, looks like you are progressing at a good rate. Seems like a fine way of getting a strong gear box and some boost into a Mk5 without using a 20vT. Any goals for power? 150+ should be a nice start I'd think?

thanks fella, yea hopefully will be around the 170bhp mark ideally.

not really sure what my spec can acheive?

So far you have:

1272 rebuilt G40 PY Block

The LMR Turbo Head / Camshaft with some fettling

Bigger FMIC

Std G40 Injectors

G40 Inlet

I'd say 150 was doable - with a GT inlet - some greens and a custom remap after the run in should see 170 with EASE...

I'll get the chrome bits out this weekend - this is unique and most of my old car bits have been used - it is nice to see it live on!

Dave :smirk:

don't forget

the chip

psd 4branch

additional charger porting

hopefully custom 55mm pulley

oh yea dewedged too! :unibrow:

Good work

Nice to see a 6n2 with some old skool flava

Will you take bets on it? £2 on it being within a month...if you have a raised limiter £5 on two weeks

55mm pulley WOW

i'll be running it in for a couple of weeks then at the end of the month it'll be green injectors polished and ported gt inlet and chip to suit and we'll try the pulley.

anyone know how much psi a standard g40 produces? i'm worried than my plastic ended fmic will blow apart as they're only usually good for 16 ish psi before the ends blow off!
